Hi all,

first post here, let’s go.
So I’m installing a smart switch in my kitchen and after pulling the existing switch out I noticed that there are only two cables in the wall box. Each of the two goes to the switch with a simple straight connection. I’m assuming that these are both live wires. This would mean that I don’t have a neutral or a ground wire. I can’t install my smart switch without at least a neutral. How should I proceed?

you either get a neutral in there if possible or exchange the switch for one that doesn't need a neutral.

No you have a hot in and hot out. New wires are required, a neutral and a ground if your new switch requires it because your existing one does.
