Discuss RCD protection in industrial setting circuits in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi All

Hope someone can help

In industrial setting are all circuits required to be RCD protected ? Or is it just socket circuits ?

Thanks in advance
Just socket circuits..mostly cabling surface mount in appropriate containment so not requiring additional protection

ok that’s great thanks for the responses, what about items that are fixed wired for example heaters that are hard wired and fridges that are hard wired ? Even though they can be moved do they require RCD protection ?

If they are plugged into the socket circuits i think so.
Hard wired then they are not portable ie: not hand held

The installation method of the circuit may require it.

It is worth remembering that just because an item is hard-wired (fed from a spur), it does not preclude the duties imposed under PUWER98. Portability of the "current using equipment" is no longer a consideration, there are few exclusions from scope in that codeof practice but in essence if (for example) the equipment is either managed externally (private hire firms) or has dedicated maintenance requirements (BS5939-1 systems for example) then it does not require ISITEE testing

ISITEE (PAT Testing) isn't a legal requirement but it DOES provide an audit trail to show compliance with statutory requirements.
