My son was 17 a few weeks back and he's had 10 driving lessons - this afternoon I will venture out with him for the first time!

Anyone got any words of reassurance ..... or experiences they want to share:yes:

just relax and don't be tempted to be over- controlling. i remember my dad teaching me initially as he was too tight-fisted to pay for lessons. he sat with one hand in the door handle and the other on the handbrake. a real confidence booster. NOT. this was in a 1956 Ford Thames van 3 gears, no synchromesh, YUK.

Just look to see how well he has been taught , some of the instructors around here leave a lot to be desired.
As for the rest , try and teach him a bit of machine sympathy , and be patient with him.

i remember my mum holding the door handle and roof handle for her life, screaming and shouting at every minor thing i did, it shot my confidence and wound me up. Be calm and collected and try not to fly off the handle. Best get him good on the pedals the rest is easy.

Best think to do is make a deal with one of his friends dads and you take his friend out for driving lessons and his friends dad takes your son out. It will save a family argument that you might never get over.

Well. ..... I took him to a local business park which was deserted and he went round a few times, going round roundabouts, corners, t junctions etc.

We then meandered home along quieter roads.

I was quite relaxed when we got home.

Next time it's up to mum to have a go!

I remember my dad giving my mum lessons lol in a Hillman Imp

it was a straight road and she was all over it from one side to other while I was rolling around on back seat
she didn't get far before she got out and left us there lol

Oh and she never drove again hehe

My dad couldn't go on motorway when she was in the car but when she wasn't and he got a 2.0l XLE Cortina mark 3 we flew
