Unvented means direct mains fed(water), where immersions are usually tank fed. There are different regs that govern work on unvented systems.
The most important reg being you need to be G.3 qualified to do ANY work on them, including changing an element.

Why do I need to be qualified?
To be able to carry out work on an Unvented Hot Water System installers need to be able to demonstrate there competence by holding a current certificate of competence.
The spilling inspires confidence. If they cannot get that right what else do they get wong!!

As mentioned an unvented systems means the system is all enclosed where as a traditional vented system is open like an open top water tank in the loft.

can be very high pressure, (depends on area) there are cases of being wrongly plumbed and have blown up taking the side wall out of a house hence the training and certification to labc when installing them!
