which cable for volt free boiler thermostat.

Hi,

Ive been asked to connect a volt free thermostat to a combi boiler. The cable needs to either go from the boiler (under capping/plaster) upstairs, across the joists, and back down under capping/plaster in the hall, or may be behind the kitchen units, round the kitchen, and then through the wall into the hall.

What cable should I be using, I am thinking about 1mm flex. Should I use something else?

we did them at gas board and just used 1.0mm t&e same as anything else .

1mm t&e, 0.75 or 1mm flex. Your choice according to what you have to hand. Bear in mind it should be protected by a 3A fuse too (Gas Regs requirement).

How many cores does the device need? Just 2 or any more?

Are you chasing out for this job or is it all done before hand.

You can get a decent RF room stat for about 50 quid. Means you won't have to take up floors and chase walls to fit it.

Volt free is usually 2 core. If being plastered in I would choose twin and earth

Done beforehand, place is undergoing a full refurb so wired is as easy as rf.

If using t&e flat, then it should be changed to a flex for the boiler connection (enters via a gromit on the bottom and connects on a flip down panel), so flex all the way may be the best option. Only need 2 cores.

If you are talking about a standard room stat then you need to run a 3C&E not a T&E Yes a thermistat is a switch but it needs a neutral for the anticipator or accelerator resistor if you dont run a neutral then your heating system will 8-10% less efficiant because you will not have proper control.

Surely thats on a 230 volt stat though.
