Hi,

Can anyone advise me on which PAT testing course you have to go on should you want to offer it as a service with your Ltd. company? the 2377-22 or the 2377- 32 or both? or Neither?!

Big thanks in advance for any help.

Dave

as above, but a 2377-22 may help if a customer searches the nic website looking for a tester,as they will only list you as doing PAT if you have the cert, assuming you are nic or want to be of course

Until someone realizes that PATesting as it used to be called, that you need to be more than just competent to be able to safely isolate, and disconnect the static, or fixed appliances fed from, as an example a FCU, to enable the testing as described in the ISITEE code of practice.

C&G 2377,get the ticket, eventually you will need it,you only have to look at the competent persons testing right now,it's gonna cause hell.

Not true.I am an NIC approved contractor with PAT testing listed under my search but i don't hold any 2377-22 certificate. They have never asked to see any in all my inspections. So to the original poster i'd say don't bother.

Competence is the main thing, as said above. Understand a) what tests should be performed on each bit of equipment, b) why you are performing them and c) what pass/fail limits are appropriate when you have the results. Also know when the inspection rather than testing is appropriate.

Also be prepared to have to use the phrase 'PAT Testing' even though it is a completely misleading and incorrect title. As Pete said, the correct term is 'ISITEE', but the general public won't know what you are talking about :)

I have seen several attempts at PAT testing which were completely pointless, and the danger is that the tester may well say 'PASS' even if the device is faulty. Similarly you may get a fail result on the tester when there is nothing wrong with the equipment.

Sorry for banging on, but having seen people testing figure 8 mains cables and setting earth tests up for Christmas lights I sometimes despair!
