Probably nothing. However he is not gas safe or is qualified to work near gas. A gas distribution company would throw the book at him.

Very few of us are qualified to work near gas, but we all attach earth clamps to the pipes which pretty much as near as dammit.

Thankfully we all learned a bit of primary school physics though so know the answer.

Once upon a time plumbers would locate small leaks in gas pipes by holding a match near the joints, the leaking gas would ignite and you'd get a little flame at the bad joint.

But then I wouldn't put anything past a determined plumber!

escaping gas under pressure will just burn/flare..

its the inert gas..... thats the dangerous stuff

thats what a drop test is all about....

Well I don't agree with taking a blow lamp to a gas pipe. I am certain HSE would agree with me too. Gas is so dangerous, it would never be worth the risk to do what Tony suggested.

If there is a leak it will catch fire and he can watch the little flame dancing in the breeze until he puts it out, not the most life threatening situation in the world.

As has been mentioned earlier, gas escaping under pressure will catch alight, gas which is relatively stationary and mixed with oxygen will explode.

this is what i was meaning...

have a look through some of your past posts in here....

you might want to edit them...before the crowd comes in for a look around in the morning...

anyway, whats your issue with tony?..

i know who i`d be backing....

My issue with his suggestion, I have no issue with him. He does not know the condition of the pipe under the paint, nor is it a risk he can take. I am not going to edit it, it is my view and you have your view.

but as has already been pointed out (by myself & others)...a leak would menefest itself as a flame....nothing more....as long as pressure is maintained...

hence me reference to the drop test earlier on in this thread...

After 8 bottles of black sheep and half a bottle JD the gas is not still and the wife has said I have got to sleep in the shed tonight as my leg is not bonded and I might blow the house up.
Think the best then to do is to get a meter fitted and then bound on new pipe, or just get paint of existing with a blade and fine sandpaper(P120)

No, its just a live supply in the event that someone wants it, there's never been a meter, I should perhaps tap off it into a boiler and a gas hob, just think, nobody would ever know!

YOU would know and you'd know very quickly!!

Between that valve on that pipe and the missing meter there should be a governor.

The gas pressure in that pipe can be something like 70 millibar and the (missing) governor reduces it to about 30 millibar before it enters the (missing) meter.

Connect that pipe straight to your boiler and gas hob and you'll never have to worry about another gas bill ever again - or anything else for that matter! ;)

I think 35 years of working on HP gas systems gives me a bit of an insight. We burnt 600,000M³ or 6.8GW per day.

He would not of carried out a drop test though and would just be assuming the integrity..

No I wouldn’t do any such test simply because I know it can’t be done on a live system. Other methods are used.

Get back to me when you know what you are talking about.

I can't believe how much of a deal you are all making out of this, we'll I can actually.

i only asked what you would do with regard to sanding a bit of paint off the pipe, I've already established in going to bond it, I just wondered if anyone else had a better suggestion...

Soften the paint with a blowtorch first - it makes the paint removal easier and as an added bonus will perform a leak test for you at the same time. :)

Always happy to help. ;)

But if that was my house and as already said by op that there is a 230v socket within close proximity then I would be bonding it if it needed it whether the gas police liked it or not!
