Hi guys, firstly apologies if this post is in the wrong place or upsets anyone.

I am 27yrs old and have made the decision to retrain as an electrician, a decision which I have not took lightly and researched.

I have enrolled at college and am taking electrical installation level 2, two evenings a week. I am wanting to also get a job as a trainee electrician or some sort so labourer working with electricians.

The eh trouble that I have is that I cannot get an apprenticeship as the wage is only about £500 a month which is not sufficient for me to survive on and also cover my course fees.

I am looking for any advice that people can give me on the best way to break into the industry or any companies that take on trainees that have no prior experience.

any advice or guidance that people could offer would be much appreciated.

Many thanks Dave

get an apprenticeship like the rest of us
You might want to read the op he states he can't do a formal apprenticeship for financial reasons. .......

However even by doing courses and at some point getting a job in the industry to get hands on experience the sooner the better!
you will be doing an apprenticeship of sorts although it may or may not take you longer to gain the skills and knowledge required to be competant this will depend on you.

I did the same started college at 27 did 3 yrs and managed to get a start in 2nd yr I went into it with the view of doing at least 5 years before I would say to people I was a qualified competent electrician, which I did, it takes time there are no shortcuts and all you can do is continue studying even after you have the papers and get as much experience as possible , ask sensible questions to get sensible answers and do lots and lots of research yourself as you will be told a wide range of information some will be right some won't. ..

Personally I went to quite a few firms to work in different aspects of the trade doing this will help you decide on the type of work you want to do ,
however many firms do work across domestic, commercial and industrial
If you work hard and are genuinely committed then you should do well!

what college you applied to ?

get a cscs card first. then register with every agency you can think of as an electrician's mate.

As above really.
After I did my 2330 I got myself a part time job as a bouncer while doing agency work to make up the shortfall. Why not try a second job evening/weekend work if you intend on doing agency work as a mate coz at least that way you have an income when the agency has no work for you?
I did this to gain experience before going to employers direct as they tend to prefer qualified and experienced people
