Chaps,

We have a roof coming up which is close boarded.

Anyone have experience of such tings? Are you cutting out areas of the close board so the roof anchors sit direct on the rafters or are you bolting the anchors down on top of the boards?

Cheers!

We have done several around here and have two to do this week if the wind lets up.

Through the board into the rafter as has been said. Oh and the nails are the give away.

You will see where the rafters are from the nail's that have been used to fix the boards. Screw your anchors straight through the boards to the rafters. That's our experience anyway.

I'm sure we'll be fine using the nails as guides. I did notice many nails to the left and right of the rafters.

We do have a stud locator which i'll make sure is on-board.

Great, thanks all. I understand the boards are feather edged so I've bought in some roofing spacers / packers in case we need them.

Cheers!

I'd be interested to hear how you get on. We had one like this a few weeks back. The boards had been felted on the outside so the nails holding the boards to rafters were not visible. Really slowed us down.

We got the anchors and rails on today. There was a bitumen-like membrane over the close-boards and quite a lot of the boards had rotted underneath that. It was hard work for sure, some padding out etc to be done under the anchors. Thankfully, from outside, where the sofit usually is we could see the rafter ends so we had a good guess where they were..but I still had to take a 2mm drill bit and find my way to the rafters then follow the line up the roof keeping the 2mm drill bit handy..

Sounds like a fun day!

On our one like this we couldn't see rafter ends so we ended up drilling a 2mm pilot hole from the inside of the roof either side of our first rafter at the top and bottom of the roof, and then measuring to the centres of the other rafters we needed from there.
