Hi. Renovating bathroom. I need supplies to power
(1) fan
(2) electric towel rail
(3) underfloor heating and
(4) Mira digital shower/bath filler.

I have a spare path on the main consumer unit (was the electric shower) and was considering putting a second CU in the loft to drive these. Comments please?

If possible
  • what MCB should I have at the main CU.
  • What MCB should I have for each of the above. Note - the fan won't be on the lighting circuit as the Mrs wants dimmable lights!
  • What size cable from the main CU

Thanks

Be aware that installing/changing a CU, or adding a circuit to an existing CU, is notifiable work in England and Wales under Part P of the building regulations.

You can pay building control to inspect your work, but it is much cheaper and safer simply to get in an electrician who is a member of one of the competent persons schemes, such as NICEIC (or SELECT in Scotland) as they can self-notify building control without the usurious fees they charge.

Of course, the schemes charge usurious fees themselves, so not all electricians elect to join them if they mostly do industrial/commercial work and so don't need the building notification aspect.

Whilst the forum will help DIY members within reason we do not extend to giving step by step advice. The works you are proposing and asking for help with is way beyond the scope of your competence and would recommend you seek the services of an electrician.

otherwise, you'll fall foul of the part pee gestapo. AKA Building Control, who could make you rip it all out.
