Hi, I was hoping someone could help me. I have recently brought a 3rd gen nest and installed it myself. I am currently using the usb stand however I want to mount the thermostat on the wall. I can't run cable from heatlink to thermostat, not possible. However in the kitchen near to a light switch may be an option. The light switch has power, neutral and earthing. I was wondering if i could spur power off here and use a transformer to convert the mains power to 12V and then off to the thermostat. I have looked at a few other forums and it has been suggested this is possible however the transformer was never specified. The power consumption of the nest is 0.15A at 12VDC.

I have found this transformner 240v to 12v LED Driver - 12 Watt - https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/LALED12DRV12.html

can you guys help?

Thanks

Matt

Don't put it in the kitchen. Heat from cooking will turn the heating off whilst the rest of the house could be cold... I speak from experience as my parents room thermostat is just outside the kitchen and it is afflicted by this problem.

Edit:- Unless of course it is specifically for a zone which is the kitchen :)

There’s a few problems here.
Putting your thermostat in the kitchen is daft as per sparkychick’s post
Powering it from your own transformer arrangements will likely affect the warranty.
A lighting circuit is best suited to feeding lights, the clue is in the name. Whilst the circuit will be more than capable of supplying the necessary power and you may be able to do this in full compliance with the wiring regulations you could come to regret it further down the line.

I very much doubt that any nest pro would carry out a non-standard installation like this and accept the liability for not installing it as per nest’s instructions

Precisely ... op calls nest installer, nest installer advises on best course of action ..

we've got a pretty big open plan kitchen so where i would have it wouldn't be a problem. The thing is i don't want to or really need to get a nest pro out, I've already wired the heatlink to the boiler no issues, and I've access to the power supply its just the technical nuance of transforming the mains. In an ideal world id run cables from the heatlink to the thermostat however this isn't possible, the heatlink acts as a transformer so surely I can do that with a separate one?

Don’t the Nests run off 5v USB?

Hi Dave,

if i am happy to risk warranty and everything, would using that transformer work?

change a socket outlet to one of these. then use the usb. they do double ones as well. all available in various styles including white plastic
