Evening Guys,

A client has approached me, he has a shipping container which is located at a remote location which he intends to use mainly for storage but he would like a couple of lights in it and a double socket.

The intention is to leave the generator outside and install a commando type plug to the side of the container, inside this will be connected to a 2 way rcd consumer unit, one for the socket and one for the lighting which will be switched.

Having never installed a generator in a situation like this before I have been looking into the earthing arrangements that may be required but Im getting somewhat confused.

Does somebody know what is needed in a situation like this? whether I need to install an earth rod for the generator?

Its complicated further because the client has the requirement to remove the generator to use a couple of times a year at another location.

Its a single phase, 3KVA generator.

many thanks

If it's one of these tiny portable genny's, you don't really need any special earthing if it's just for a bit of lighting etc . Just don't plug in any sensitive electronic equipment. Most of these small portable genny's have an integral floating earth system. Always best to check with the genny manufacturer or the installation instructions in the first instance though!!!
