Hi I'm after abit of advice if anyone can help me it would be a great help. I qualified as an electrician in 2008 I was qualified to the 16th edition since then I haven't had an electricians job and I went another way with work but now I'm looking to get back into being an electrician and need some advice on how to go about this would I need to go back to college? or just apply for jobs? Or is there another way of getting back into being an electrician? Any help will be grateful thank you. Ste

Welcome to the forum,

I would advise you to take the 17th edition asap. You will need this if you decide to apply for any job or scheme (niceic) etc.
There have been a few amendments to the regs since you last worked as an electrician. So brushing up on your knowledge is a must. :)

Ok thank you. Do you think I will still have be able to pass the 17th edition even though I haven't been working as an electrician? Do you think some volunteer work to get back into it would be useful?

What do you mean by qualified to the 16th? Do you only hold the 16th or do you hold other qualifications?

I am a qualified electrician qualified to the 16th edition I did my apprenticeship passed my AM2 got my card which is now out of date also

Search the forums for 17th Edition past papers.
If you can't find any I think I have some from 2008, when I did mine. PM me your email address and I will email them to you.

Yeah, probably a good idea to do your 17th then and get up to date. You should fly through it with a little bit of study. Alan Lynch's Electrician's Safari helped me massively on achieving the 17th. Think it's about a tenner on Amazon.

Ok thank you I'll give it a go. What's the best step after passing 17th edition?

I would say work experience, so your idea of volunteering somewhere isn't a bad one at all. However, there's nothing to stop you getting work experience now before you even go for the 17th.

Ok does anyone know someone who would be willing to take me on as a volunteer? How do I go about reinstating my electricians card? And is there anything else I need to do? Pass?

and it will take weeks to get it. best going for a cscs card just to get on site.

Ok thank you wouldnit be worth going for part p aswell? Also how do I go about renewing my electricians card?
