Hi all.

Just posting to find out a bit about auto electrics, reason being is that as I'm an electrician, I often get asked if I can look at electrical faults on peoples cars. And I always turn it down as I've never touched any electrical stuff in cars before.

Is there a course to do on auto electrics or is that just something that comes from working with cars alot?
I'd like to be able to take the work on and get a bit of extra income from helping people out with their cars.

Any info would be appreciated, cheers.
Tommy.

Hi Tommy
I am in the same boat as you, i can work on older cars, but the newer ones i just say no, specially as everything is pretty much hooked up into the cars ECU. I recently found out that the wiring loom of a car will be much smaller as all the sensors e.t.c. will be hooked up to a "Profibus" kind of system............ confused.com

Ah right, so it's quite a specialist type thing now then. I'd like to learn how to do it all but I'm assuming it's gonna come at a big cost.

Do you know anything about stage lighting and sound system things at all? That's another area I'm looking at getting in to if possible.

That'll be quite a large investment. Every manufacturer uses their own encodings (the protocol is standard serial) for fault codes etc. So you'll be forking out quite a lot on the diagnostic software. Nothing stopping you do the alternator/battery wiring type faults though.

Yeah that's the sort of stuff people have asked me to work on. Probably try and find someone to work a few Saturdays with for free to get some experience.
