I am keeping this in the arms as the clown I am going to tell you about could be lurking on the PAT forum as you all know I did not want to do PAT testing but after losing a few jobs because they wanted this as well so I thought bite the bullit spent £800 tooling up and did not cut any corners as I tend to do. So last week I was asked to survey the job so I met the guy in charge and he said just PAT what the last guy did the caretaker will show you So I got the caretaker from hell who is a retired copper and as he said he has been doing some studying on this subject and he informed me that you dont need to PAT class I equipment me said no actually I think you mean class II but I believe HSE are doing an investigation on this but you still need to check out lead condition, fuse, plus if the equipment has any metal parts then you need to test it to make sure there is no leakage but thanks for your input I said Well I am not happy he said so I said look lets just get all the equipment registered and checked/tested then you can look over it next year plus is there a problem here because I can leave this until you can sort this out no was the reply come in next week (today) to do it. Fine spoke to the head man and said look I dont need the hassle so is it ok because this guy looks like a dog with a bone. No your fine he said I will have a word with him.

So I set aside this morning to do the job and yep you guessed right the jobs worth nailed me when I walked in the door he then started to question my competence and then told me that I and the guy who did the job before me did not have a clue so I sat there and took this abuse and when he was finished I said so you reckon that certain items should not be tested fine tell you what you make a list for me and then put an instruction not to test or check this equipment and that you will take full responsibility for any problems that may arise . Well the colour drained from his face and I said this is where I depart as you conduct is not acceptable if you want a jobs worth fine but you have picked on the wrong guy and the wrong subject as Me thinks my 36 years outnumber your I have been on the internet comment plus in your case a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing The reply was we will get a company in I said fine then get prepared to be taken for a ride he then ran after me to my motor and I then said I dont need to be escorted out I then phoned his boss who agreed that he was a jobs worth plus he warned him not to get involved.

And to think I did not even want to do this bl00dy PAT testing.

Rant over and no money made

Winning is not an option, methinks.
Sympathy for the hassle, all too common now.
Best of luck for the next PAT testing (If you ever do it again!)

Thanks basically I need to have the option as I have put it off for the past 2 years and I do landlord/letting agent work funny thing is the letting agent use a PAT company and I only get the odd landlord asking me but if I dont have it then I get well dont bother I dont want half a job done plus I keep a low profile ie dont offer it unless I am asked but me thinks you bump into these guys once in a blue moon. Mind you I think this reflects the state of the PAT industry anybody and everybody have a say because no one will give a definition

The thing these people forget is that acording to recent edicts by the HSE there is no need to pat test if it can be proven that equipment is checked regularly by a competent person and you can prove this is sufficient. However there is a caution that should anything go wrong the onus is on you the person in charge to prove that the system you use is adequate.Bearing in mind that in a court case you could not only lose a lot of money but also your freedom,I know which route I,d choose. However some people will take the chance, their problem not yours Oldtimer,as the sayin goes"you can lead a horse to water but you can,t make it drink"

Yep thats why I told him to list the equipment in writing and the sign and date it but as always I am to clever for my own good because he suddenly realised that I boxed him in. The only problem is that he is getting his police pension so he thinks he can go into battle with me because he does not have to worry about his job Me I have told his manager I cannot afford to take his ego for a spin. Nope me thinks he will get someone else in then when they get the cost it will be a callback to me in week or 2 if not fine

I lost an EICR from one of my students because I wasn't in a position to carry out PAT several weeks ago, so I understand where you are coming from.
Drives me bloody mad when people who have read a book start lecturing me about electrics!

I came across a jobsworth at the Sunderland air show last weekend, there was a small flight of steps with a wall beside it which was less than 1 metre high. We needed somewhere to put the grandson down while we gave him some food so I sat on the wall, cue a steward "You can't sit there"
"Why not" said I
"H&S"
A short discussion followed re the validity of his H&S claim which ended with him calling the police who after me telling them why I was wanting to sit there for a few minutes told him, more or less, to wind his neck in.
The funny thing was this steward was standing on the very 1 metre wall he was telling me I couldn't sit on

One rule for those in power, and one for the rest of us...

Update his boss phoned me back I have to go back a week on Monday as he will not be their as the attitude seems to be to put up with it but he is not in on a Monday so his boss has agreed for me to do it and make up a register then as I said you can all sit down and decide but remember its your decision and responsibility .:smug:

Also got an email you put some lights up for me in the past can you do some more please and also can you send me your costs for PAT testing as I want that done at the same time You could not make it up could you.:1eye:

And just to add doing PAT on it own will not make me a fortune but doing it at the same time as say putting a couple of lights up then happy days plus if it keeps up like this it will pay for itself in the first year ie £800 it cost to get tooled up as this is what I planned for

Glad to hear you have had a result on this OT, jobsworths are a right pain and talking to them is like talking to a wall and just as useful.
As you say, pat testing is just an add on which can bring other work with it.

oldtimer, simple answer to this... "If you know so much about this subject then why are you not doing it" oh the simple answer "Because you cannot so truck off" lol

Experience you most definitely have so you will know you cannot win them all, some you will not want and others you will most definitely get.

Good luck with your PAT testing future:thumbsup

PS Sorry, didn't read whole thread :(

I dont want this to be a living only to compliment my business as I do repairs for rental properties and as I said on its own its pants but along side other work well it makes it a bit easier to do and profitable. Mind this situation has not been helped by the HSE report on PAT testing as it is as clear as mud plus he was shoving HSE stuff under my nose dont get me wrong 5 years ago I would have told him where to go but instead I took the moral high ground and spoke with authority and to be honest I am not going to let my heart rate rise for PAT testing. Also I am glad I tooled up the right way ie I bought the kewtech kt71 bundle did the C&G 2377 got stickers made up and even bought a microwave tester plus adapted documentation as well why because of pricks like this. Anyway I am on course for it paying for itself within the first year and after that it is clear profit

OT, with you all the way on doing PAT for certain clients. I do exactly the same. I have a low number of clients but i do a very wide range of services for them. It would be unusual for me to tell them to go elsewhere for what is an electrical test.

BTW in the last couple of years, have done a suspended ceiling, extended a hot air duct heating system, re-programmed telephone exchanges and am just about to go into pneumatics as i need to install a pneumatic vacuum pump.

My view is " If it looks doable - i tell the client i will do it. If i have doubts and think its beyond me - i suggest they get a specialist in. I have had to do this a couple of time trying to fix machine tools CNCs that went too deep.
Good Luck and good for you.
