Hi all

question, I have just take out a transformer for a mr16 down light it, was a varlight 50w about three years old, I replaced it with the same varlight transformer just a new one, it's a new design but the looks of it but still the same model. Now the lights buzz. Do varlight transformers only like var light dimmers as there is a new dimmer in to, it's only 4 down lights (one driver per light) and the dimmer can has a rating of 300w. The dimmer is not buzzing only the lights. Did not check that the bulb was a dimmer able one. But it does dimm properly it just buzz.

It it should not be buzzing, or should I just stick in the varlight dimmer.

old transformer was a "old school" type proper transformer and you replaced it with a electronic one? (it may have a same set of connections and rating, but should be lighter in weight)?

The one i took out was an electronic transformer (newer transformer). thats why i was wondering why it now buzzes, as i side its a like for like replacement just the new transformer as a different (new) case design.

A light cannot buzz, maybe it's something to do with the frequency at which it is operating and this is close to the resonant frequency of the holder and it is causing a slight vibration which is interpreted as a buzzing noise.

But is it the lamp buzzing, or the tranny?.

if they both electronic then the newer one may have a different circuitry inside, or producer did not put inductors big enough to suppress the buzz.
swap for another brand and see how it goes...

Its differently the the lamp, i took it out of the ceiling and turned the it on the buzzing is coming from the can/lamp not the tranny. So why is it buzzing. I tried swopping out the lamp with another one from the other bank of down lights that do not buzz. still buzzed so it was not the type of lamp. I change the tranny for one of the older ones so you ended up with all four trannies are of the same age type/make ect. still buzzed. there are only four down lightt on this circuit/dimmer. the only way it stops buzzing is when you remove one othe the circuit only consists of 3 down lights. This is probable why maybe that the previous owner did not have its on/lamp in it.

The dimmer still does not buzz. should the dimmer be changed for a better quality one. maybe a Varlight to match the trannies. is it some how messing with the frequency.

Anyone got any ideas..
