I am replacing out-of-production CSL LED recessed ceiling lights with Elco EL39727. The CSL light assemblies will be removed leaving the empty NC housing in place and the CSL drivers will be cut out AT THE DRIVER END NOT THE POWER SPLICE END leaving leaving two 16 gauge stranded power wires (spliced to the incoming power wires) to connect to. This is because the power lines coming into the housing do not have sufficient length to allow me to disconnect the driver at the power splice end, I have to cut at the base of the driver to capture the extra length. The Elco fixture comes with an Ideal 30-682 luminaire female plug. But the stranded power wires (cut from the driver) in the CSL box are too flexible to insert into the male Ideal plug and replacing these wires with solid is not an option (the 3" hole is too small to get 2 hands inside of if I uncap the splice end). One option, I can tin the stranded wires and then get them to lock into the Ideal connector but given that I have 56 of these to do, it will add a lot of time to the job to tin the leads on all these wires. Option two (faster option) is to simply cut off the female Ideal plug from the Elco fixture and splice the power to the Elco but I'm worried that having two splices inside the housing is not California code-compliant? What's the right way to do this without tearing the ceiling apart?
