Hi,

I looking to support a friend who is a local handyman. He does not have any electrical qualifications but is more than competent and I have seen his work which I think is to a good standard.

Is there a list of work he is legally permitted to carry out? I’m keen to support him but don’t want to void my own insurance etc.

Many thanks.

Handyman can pretty much do anything , only thing they can't do is self certify for part pee

what your insurance will cover / not cover will be in the very fine print

If he is working with you then you will need to make sure regarding public liability cover as you will be named as the main contractor. Even if he has public liability any claim would be down to you. I am a one man band & if I require help, for around an extra £120 premium a year or so I am covered for 56 days of part-time employers liability for £10 Million. Public Liability to £5 million. I guess also if you are testing or designing Electrical installations Public indemnity.

Remember you will need installation/minor works certificates for any work done. Apart from like for like replacement.
