Possible commercial job

Wondering if any electricians in or around south east london/bromley could help. I have recently qualified and i am in the process of setting up a business. My NICEIC approved contractor assessment date is booked for next month (on a Saturday) and i am looking for a some commercial work that i can take on and sign off to take the assessor to (preferably something headache free e.g small install or minor works). At the moment most of my recent jobs are all domestic and they specified on the phone that i need to include a commercial based job in the assessment, but its not as easy to find commercial work without a company like NIC on your website.

Surely you must have a friend somewhere with a business. Tell them you will do some install work for them for free (something small) if you can use it for your assessment.

To be honest i dont have anyone with any commercial property or i would do exactly that! I dont mind doing a few hours work for free its just finding the work. It also needs to be withing half an hour (ish) of my property for the assessor to visit.

I thought that you had to have been trading history and compleated installations before you could enrol as an approved contractor. No doubt the usual replies regarding brown envelopes and chocolate biscuits will follow in due course. Never known them to do A/C assessments on a Saturday?

I have know them accept a bit of steel conduit in a garage as acceptable...

Ring them and ask if you put up some metal containment in your garage would this be acceptable

I think gone are the days when you need 3 different types of installation

Just to add...you say all of your recent work is domestic

Is it really worth doing full approval contractor if you don’t do much of this kind of work

Why not just go the cheap easy route and do part pee domesticated installer

When I say ‘cheap’ I should say ‘cheaper’ as no scheme is cheap.

But if you only do domestic then look for the cheapest domestic installer option

Why spend money you don’t have to ....

The aim is to do commercial once i have nic on my company, alot of bigger companies wont deal with you unless your on a competency scheme.

You only need a full trading history for your “yearly checkup” for the first assessment you need to provide them with 5 recent jobs for the assessor to pick 3 to visit. I have completed installations just nothing commercialised apart from working for a previous company on my apprenticeship. And they booked the Saturday!

I do mostly commercial, In 5 years trading, I think only 2 or 3 customers have ever mentioned NICEIC membership.
Even council work does not require scheme membership.

I think the only ones that care are the big organisations/ insurance companies.

If you are just starting up, I would stick to the smaller customers, the payment terms of the big boys will drive you nuts if you don't have the cashflow.

If your only looking to do commercial I would not bother with a scheme.

I wouldn't bother unless you will gain work for being a member. If you are doing a good job, complying with the regs and have competitive prices you should easily get work. We do regular commercial work direct for two companies (as well as a few one-offs) that pay on the month in arrears we know their payment plans and pay in full. We have so far not being in the NICEIC Approved Contractors Scheme prevented us from doing commercial work.
Are there companies that are offering you work saying you have to be a member of the NICEIC A/C I think that this is being challenged by the other scheme providers doing the full scope

its not so much getting more work being nic registered its just less hassle, anytime i do an install outside of a competency scheme i have to notify building control and pay for someone to come out etc, i guess i could become a domestic installer but its all been paid now and is booked so hopefully can find something (still have over a month)

So this has nothing to do with commercial work but notification under part P just go with the one that will cost the least.

Its to do with both like i said i intend to take on commercial work in the future and would rather be an approved contract than a domestic installer. Just trying to find a simple job i can complete and sign off id be happy to do the work for free if its not to costly.

If you want to go with the NICEIC you can go with D.I and upgrade to A/C.

Elliott With all due respect if you have no commercial contacts you are wasting your hard earned money

Just become a domesticated installer with whom ever is cheapest this year and tackle the commercial stuff later down the line
