I've recently joined the safe trader scheme for free with local council. I had a member of trading standards come round and speak to me and check my details. It was quite informative, i was given advice on scams that customers have been pulling on tradesmen in my local area. I wasn't to know that any quote/estimate that is given in a customers house must have a 7 day cooling off period. If not the customer is within his rights not to pay. That includes extra's, unless written consent is given to start earlier. A local builder has just been taken for £2000 a customer asked him to do extras on a job he was working on and didn't pay because of his rights to 7 days cooling off even though he had accepted original price and he hasn't got a leg to stand on. Watch out guys

Scary never heard of this one...

It's also part of the Trustmark scheme's terms and conditions that you explain and adhere to this 'cooling off period'.

Of course if you read the small print, you'll see the obvious loopholes regarding where the quote is issued etc!
