I always understood it to be the other way round ! On the ceiling 300mm from the wall

A quick scan of guide to building regs gives - Ceiling mounted alarms must be 300mm from lights and walls.

- only detectors and alarms suitable for wall mounting are to be wall mounted and fixed above doorway height.
