Morning chaps!

I was just wondering... If you install a new socket on an existing ring or anything on an existing circuit in fact, how would you go about putting your test results on the installation certificate? Surely you would then be testing someone elses work?

Thanks for the advice!

Mark

I quote BS7671: "The minor works electrical certificate is intended to be used for additions & alterations to an installlation that do not extend to the provision of a new circuit. Examples include the addition of a socket outlet or lighting point" etc etc..
Here's the Caviat: "Appropriate inspection & testing, however, should always be carried out irrespective of the extent of work undertaken."

So yes, you may be testing someone elses original installation but as you touched it last you are responsible. Best thing to do is to test it before you carry any work on a circuit, that way you will also be able to know that any subsequent faults (God forbid) be present.

Best Practice is to carry out a full set of tests on the existing circuit before work commences. This proves the existing circuit is safe and complies with BS7671.

If there is a fault you can either quote extar cost for fault finding or Make safe if necessary and inform client of the fault in writing.

If everything is OK complete the work and then carry out inspection, Test and correct certification depending if the work is notifiable or non-notifiable under Part P.
