alright folks,

Im in the process of buying my first house. The house needs some work doing especially a rewire. The home owner is a ive worked on a building site and seen it done before type of bloke. Will upload pics when sale goes through unless they have to get a CU change done, but in words the main switch on an old rewireable fuse box is broke, so hes jammed the Live into the open side of the fuse with i presume just the fuse carrier holding it in looks that way to power all ciruits, was shocked when i saw it, he even told me himself it was illegal. Not to mention highly dangerous as the fuse board is located under stairs which is used as storage aswell.

so anyway back to the reason for my post due to the above problem and me wanting sockets etc where i would like them im going to be rewiring the property. so during the rewire ill also be fitting an intruder alarm and tv points/virgin media. My problem is ive never done any tv points or anything myself before and im a bit lost for where to start. Basically im wanting TV/virgin media in the majority of rooms, now i know i can get a box from virgin for each room but that implies monthly charges, also i dont want to have the same channel on in every room.

So im hoping a few of you that are experienced in this field could help me out. My aim (not sure if its possible) is to run 2/3 boxes with possibly a couple of magic eyes like for sky to be able to change the channel from each room. The virgin coming into the property is located in the living room, Im looking at maybe 1 box in living room, and 1 in main bedroom, (3 bed property) can i distribute the signal from 1 room into a further 2? can i use magic eyes to change channel? and without sounding daft will normal flush coax plates suffice or is there a certain type i need for virgin media?

If above is possible i was thinking of running cables from each box to other bedrooms to give maximum channel options. So if my OH was watching tv downstairs i could watch something different in 1 of the other bedrooms or if she was watching in main bedroom i could watch something different in Other bedrooms as such

long winded i know but any help would be greatly appreciated

I was never like that! Maybe that's why I got paid the big bucks and progressed onto service tech and then network tech, most installers for virgin are sub contractors. Such as maps, Fujitsu or Kelly's.

As for the cabling in the hedge! That's a sackable offence! Must be buried in flexible conduit or clipped direct to wall etc.

I know !!

I looked and saw the cable was clipped to the wall about a foot off the ground at one end of the bush (hedge really) and saw it at the other end of the bush - again about a foot off the ground & clipped to the wall & assumed - wrongly that it would be either clipped all the way along the wall or protected by conduit. It wasn't. Instead, it rose about 2 feet higher as it passed through the bush which I was cutting down so the blokes who are coming to fit cavity wall insulation could get access to the wall.

Virgin Media sent a woman out yesterday to fix it with a big orange joint box filled with silicone stuff & left it dangling in the bush ...... :32:

I have to say it looks a bit of an eyesore............. the woman who fitted the orange box wasn't even a spark, but a van driver who "does stuff as and when!"............ considering the extortionate prices Virgin charge you would think they would be a bit more professional. Maybe Branson should stick to making small bite pickle.

Those orange boxes containing sticky stuff are sodding expensive! can't remember its name!!! have a few in the garage kicking around... and they are a temp fix, they will have booked you in for a re pull :)

make sure you kick up a fuss, find the local depot they work out off or let me know and ill find you the contact in there to speak with to get it put right :)

Well, I questioned the fact of the box being waterproof, and the woman said it would last forever. Should I create hell (as per) and demand a new cable? Thanks Kris for the offer, I may just take you up on that!!!!

Thanks Kris.

I'll hang fire for a bit until the cavity wall insulation bloke are all finished then take it from there. :)

There was no reason that I can see why the original Virgin installer didn't shove a bit of conduit between the bush/hedge & the wall & feed the cable through it.

It was already installed when girlfriend bought the house last year so didn't see what a shambles the job was. Then when I chopped the bush, I did try to see where the cable was & was sure that I was well away from it.

The funny thing is, I've rewired her house completely with no problems at all - not even a tripping RCD -but she didn't mention that on this board, but as soon as I chop her broadband, phone & TV cable she tells the world, his wife & the dog all about it !!! :bigcry::nopity:

Never mind ... I'll get my own back on her !!! :53:

Amazing :) women huh? they just can't live without Facebook, shopping and the telephone! and as for missing an episode of Eastenders....

Those jelly filled sticky things can be used for a permanent solution, but it's best they re wire it.....

I had to use around about 28 of those after some kids set fire to a local DP in the street, had to cut the cables in the pit, and splice new ones in. until such time we could establish who was a legit customer ;) or not lol... and then trace all the feeds back to properties as most of the installation techs never bothered to add tag info for the ID lol... so tone tracers etc...

:lol::lol::lol:

Well nearly everyone of the Gel Packs I fitted "failed", Had better results with a good taped up joint. (ps not the smoking type) .. thought I would get it in first.....

Ok Geordie, I bow down to your utmost professionalism,... you rewired my house to perfection as everything you do is always spot on!!!! Erm.. I didn't actually mention who cut the wires if you refer to my first post............ :)

Just an update on how crap Virgin Media is....:mad2:, there was an "essential maintenance" being performed by them this evening, consequently our telephone, broadband and TV went off. It came on after a few minutes then disappeared again. A message flagged up telling me my recording space was "critical" so I went onto the recordings and found they had all gone!!!!! Apparently there was an interruption between the Virgin box and my recordings so they weren't recognised. All the "Embarrassing bodies" gone..........:33: I'm spittin!!!!

Never mind pet .... you can have mine tomorrow. ;)

We had trouble with our Virgin Internet connection the other week, it was going on and off for a few days.
Our lass rang them up and had a whinge about it and they gave her a £30 refund or credit.
