Watch out folks, there is a new Government Qualification about to be set in motion, watching Watch Dog last nigh and the they want all Smart Meter fitters will need to have a Diploma in Smart Meter installation, wonder how long it will take for the Scams to get a foothold in it?

My Better Half heard this report about trouble in smart meter land and said to me "you should help them, you're better than that ...".
Less said, less to repair o_O
Not rocket science is it Wilko, some of the excuses they came up with " Restricted access, meter cupboards full of household equipment"

I can just see a new C&G course coming out with sections on cupboard clearing and screwdriver use :)

Wonder if the tool manufactures will cotton to a niche market "Smart Meter screwdriver sets with instructions"? now being a Tool Tart I will have to have a set. Oh and the set will need to be a torque type wont it????

From experience of seeing some meter fitters in action, it will be a battery screwdriver

Really Pete. Tend to be the ones that have got into meter fitting "cold", from unrelated backgrounds.
I have met some very good lads too though, electricians that have turned to the job.

Some electricians I work with use an impact driver for db connections I kid you not!
Had a argument about why to not use one, thing is the young apprentices working with them pick it up and think it's fine.

Shocking practice that. My mate sometimes uses a battery driver with low clutch setting. He justifies it by finishing them off with his torque driver. Still makes me wince though.

Bad news you're right Ian picking up bad habits as a youngster, will be hard to to get out of.

Pete you want to see their faces when I tell them to do certain tasks again!
All I get is "well such and such does it like that"
I can imagine, ask them if so and so tells you to jump off this building would you jump? If you're going to do it, do it right the first time, works for me.

I won't lie this is exactly what I do.
I use a 12v Milwaukee drill and then go through after with a torque driver.

The only justification I have for this, is after 2nd fixing day in day out, for long periods, using just a screwdriver I started to get numb hands on my days off.

I'm 26 and plan to be able to successfully wipe my bum in my 70's so I've made adjustments. Don't get me wrong, my first fuseboard with a drill had 1 or 2 stripped screw heads  I then got a modulo 2 screw bit and that solved my problem. I think I've perfected my technique by using my drill to tighten up everything just enough so all I need to do is go through half a turn to tighten to the required torque with my screwdriver.

But I still hide my drill if any apprentices come in while I'm doing a fuseboard . Damage limitation.

Who benefits from a smart meter?
the smart leecy suppliers, of course. or do they. m=i=l just had a statement. overpaid by £360 on monthly DD. BG reduced payments by £6 / month. so we rang up and after a lot of argument, managed to get them to send a £350 repayment. better in her bank than BG's.

And also gives them the ability to disconnect you without gaining access to your property I have heard.

Reply from SmartEnergyGB Enquiries when I asked about remotely switching off the supply. Sent them a few questions beginning of last year.

With respect to remotely switching off energy supplies, please be assured that consumers are protected by exactly the same strict regulations that currently protect them against an energy supplier switching off or disconnecting their gas or electricity supplies. This protection remains as strong with smart meters, as it was with traditional meters.

This is also a bit of what I got from the Department of Energy & Climate Change.

Consumers will have control over who has access to their data, apart from where this is required for billing and other regulated duties. As part of the data access and privacy framework, suppliers will be allowed to access monthly data for billing purposes. Customers may opt out from allowing suppliers to access daily data, or opt in to allow suppliers to access half-hourly data. Suppliers will be required to explain clearly to their customers which data is being used, for which purposes, and what choices the consumer has about this. Thus, if a consumer has opted in to giving the supplier access to half hourly data, then the supplier will be allowed to collect information covering half hourly periods.

Energy UK has published a Data Guide which explains which data will be accessed from the smart meter, for which purposes, and what choices customers
