Now I have your attention lol, we need to chat about the competitions in the T/S.

How do you think they are going?
What should we do to make them better?
How do we get more members to interact in the comps/the T/S?

All feed back is welcome regardless if its good or bad (I've got broad shoulders).

Thinking about the next comp, dont think it should be a competition as such. No questions, no long winded PM replies for an answer, no one thinking that they should not submit an answer in case they look daft (never going to happen in there, trust me). How about:-

"Free Prize Draw"???

A few Arms members/Mentors have donated prizes for the T/S, how about a thread/prize draw and all they have to do is post on that thread and bring out the "lurkers" (btw we have just short of 200 Trainee members in there believe it or not!).

What do you think lads? Up to you........

Not with you Paul, can you enlighten me just polished off a nice bottle of red and not thinking as well as I should.

I think they're going great Paul, as far as making them better I'm not sure. A prize draw might bring some out of the woodwork but are they lurking because they like it in the shadows.

T/S = the Trainee Section. Some of us over the years (Mentors) have got this section together and kept it running (God knows how lol) and we have people that are in college, learning centers (dont start lol) that ask questions in there away from the normal "free for all" attacking general forum. It is a safe haven for them to ask what they want without getting a grilling.

The Mentors over this past year have help over a dozen Trainees pass exams, some even get the Trainees on site for some hands on experience (with pay..... dont tell the tax man). Just trying to show the way to the new lads.

Thanks Trev.

Lets try and get them out of the woodwork, this new form of comp may help???

On another note.... New college season is starting so lets post up some new learning posts and links. I'll put a bit of time in on that in two weeks or so.

I've just tried to access it and I'm locked out, no wonder why I haven't seen anything that's been going on in there??

I was an active mentor, I have never been given any reason as to why I'm no longer allowed access. Is it a glitch or something?

Well I think everything is going really well and hats off to you Paul, and others in the side line....on the subject of prizes, they are all good and help out.....but I realistically think, trainees need site experience to get them through their course.....maybe we could put our heads together, and work on a way to out here, remember there going down the long route, not the quick nasty one..

I believe the trouble members were removed from having access to the forum

Yes the forum has had problems in the past few months to say the least, that may be it? Status's have been an issue.

Anyway you should be back as a Mentor and you are more than welcome in there Mr. Skelton.

I am amazed there are 200 trainees, I would have though about six!!
Seems a lot are not sure of asking questions, but then again most questions have been already answered on the forum!!

Perhaps instead of just "post on this thread" prize draw, perhaps (if not too many respond) they could post a relevant regulation or equation about electrical installation that has not been posted on the thread before.
This would encourage early response as they could post V=IR, but then that would be out and the next is posting t= (S²k²)/I² or S= (√(I²t))/k, then the next will have to start looking in the books for something relevant.
Doing this would encourage posters to read a lot of electrical facts on the thread and have to look something up.
Then a random draw of (accurate) responses.

I liked the show us your tri plate question, but the problems with questions is the administrative burden on managing the responses (and excluding those who do not know how to pm).

Seems I'm still locked out Paul?

Paul I think Tazz is on the same path as me, the kind of thing I was talking to you about earlier, Maybe running a theme along the lines of getting to spend the day with several mentors.
Without it feeling arrogant I think they would gain far more from that than a pair of cutters

Have about 4 trainees who pm me on issues, they seem to feel afraid of asking on the forum incase they are put down.....There main problem seems the companies they are working for, putting them in positions they are not trained to do...ie sending them out to test em lighting or repair fire alarms....

I've also had trainees PM me with questions which I don't mind at all but it's been with questions that could and should have been out there in the TS because others could have benefitted from them. Every time I've told them to stick them up there and they've gotten answers.
I think some of them are still wary of what they're going to get from what they see out in open forum.

I don't do as much in trainees as I should, really. Mostly practical reasons as I tend to access here mostly via Tapa (as now) which makes technical answers a bit awkward, and also because I tend just to scan by 'recent posts' rather than the individual sections. Do PM me to come and help if its of benefit, I quite enjoy teaching!

Tazz i think I replied to the same thread has you with the above scenario, it is wrong sending theses lads out as cheap labour to work on installs of that nature .

Richard, you have hit a lot of nails on the head. Let me explain one of them....

When I set up the first and second competition I was inundated with PM replies! It was very time consuming trust me. Since then it as always been a "black & white" answer. That is the way to go with it. Besides.... anyone that fancies running a comp in there, go for it with my full approval (not joking gents, try it, it is fun).

The spectrum of Trainees is something I/we did not think about. People on first year part time level 2 Vs end of year level 3 apprentice trained being asked the same question???? Not fair and it scared a lot of people off. Chose your question carefully.

This is why I'm thinking of a free prize draw just for posting up on a thread. We can have a bit of banter and bring them into the fold.

Regarding the fear of getting ripped apart is there no way of getting it through to the trainees that they are perfectly safe in there and that any Mentor who abuses a trainee or the trainee section will be instantly Banned.
