ive got 2 cu changes to do for friends. was thinking £300 each one including tails. do these prices seem ok ? whats the going rate for a cu change on a 6 way board including tails these days ? £300 - £400? ta

assuming you're doing the job right with testing and EIC £350, knock £50 off for a mate. sorted. watch out for lack of bonding though, and make it clear that any faults on the circuits will be charged at hourly rate.

If you drop your price too much you will be a busy fool. I normally don't charge for the cert/LABC

Depends what kind of 'mates' - are you doing this for them as a favour or do they think they're doing you a favour? After you've finished will you be catching up over a few beers or will that be it until the next time they want something done on the cheap?

If you're doing it for a genuine friend I'd probably charge materials plus £100 or so, but on the other hand friends of friends or friends of family are likely to be far more demanding and want it done for next to nothing in return for them allowing you the privilege of working on their house.

NEVER!!
ive just done a fuseboard change for the 'in-laws'
freaking mess. Wouldn't have touched it if it was for a stranger.
No ring cont in kitchen...had to rewire whole of kitchen ring as 'in-law' had done it all wrong 3years previous.
NO earth sleeving ANYWHERE. Even in the old fuseboard.
Neutral fault in bedroom.
(can't think of anything else right now)

spent 2days fixing faults, then a 9hr day changing fuseboard. Had to re-route every cable through ceiling into garage, then back through wall straight into back of DB.

wanna know how much I got paid????

£0...didn't even get money for the materials!!!!

double or tripple you charge everybody else just because of the amount of problems it will cause

i try and avoid anywork for family and friends more hassle then its worth

Sister in-law called me saying that some of her kitchen sockets are no longer working. Went around to see the balls up of a job that her dad (a kitchen fitter) had done. Put it back to a rfc and added a couple of extra sockets, changed the c/u all for costs of materials only.

First reason is because I now know that she and her family are safe.
Secondly her husband is a mechanic and the brakes on my van need doing. Next week I'm off to buy materials only and have them fitted free of charge.

Some family members are worth the effort, others are not and can be a pain in the backside.
