got a portable burger-bar, and want to run fluorescent light, fridge/freezer and microwave off a generator. but its the earthing thats the main problem, can't spike the genny as gonna be on a concrete car-park! is the floating system safe to use on appliances needing normally a earth?
thought electrical (separation) was safe as it was, but so many people say its got to be earthed (as basically a TN-C-S?

regards

spoke to a lecturer today and he suggests the following;
honda 2KW genny supplying burger-bar CU. link RCD Neutral input to earth bar. bond all gas appliances, sheet metal spray-guards, griddle etc to earthing terminal with 6mm2 earth wire. genny doesn't need spiking, as going on various concrete sites makes it impractical anyway!........
so we have genny chassis, burger-bar chassis and associated extraneous parts plus exposed conductive parts connected to one pole of genny supply!
can't believe the difference in opinion on this!
opinions appreciated!

An earth rod is advisable but not essential. It's ok to have a separated supply for a single item of equipment, ie a power tool of some desription, but not more than one. In essence yes you are creating a TN-C-S sytem so you will definately need to make sure that any and all exposed steelwork is equipotentially bonded. You will need to have an RCD as the fault current will not be high enough for ADS via a fuse or MCB by itself.

Also if you are placing an N-E link in, then it's definately advisable to place a label warning of the link somewhere easy to see.
