This doesn't make sense to me. Replacing this light for a friend...from the light switch the live romex cable has BOTH neutral and hot connected together, with hot coming from the light fixture to complete. And the neutral from the fixture connected with the ground. I've never swapped something out where black/black white/white wasn't the rule...

Can you show the switch.

Sorry for the delay, had to get back to the friend's house. Here's the switch...also noticed that the romex "source" is coming from a junction with BX cable that has no ground. Not sure what the point of the ground in this circuit is if there is no ground in the BX.

It is difficult from afar to fathom out what is going on there. Assuming the left switch is connecting the white and black together then they cannot be hot and neutral as that would create a dead short but it would "appear" the whites at the switch are neutral. The ground wire connected to the whites would appear to be repurposed and this should not be the case. Without physically being there to actually test it then it is very difficult to say.
