Hi all
I am in the need of lock of device for mu part p assessment I have see one but kewtech which is a combination lock.
I don't want to buy a big kit just yet.
any preferences etc.
regards
Dave

to even suggest i am `going to buy an approved lock-off kit`...for my `assessment` is even missing the whole point of carrying out a safe isolation...

since when has being able to carry out (and successfully) acheave a safe isolation been about some half arsed assessment?

i'm old school. take cover off DB. remove feed from OCPD. replace cover. then reinstate after work completed. beats losing the key to the lock off device hands down.

initially it will be spent quite heavy lately so just basics for assessment. have looked at elecsa but just list it no price or pic

Not quite sure what your point is here, I will need to lock off when being assessed, or will be failed from the start

I know that and as part of it you need to have a form of lock off, and as I am starting out on my own there are many tool that I need, so was asking advice on lock offs not my ability to safe isolate.

he wont need to see lock off devices...

he will want to see that you can carry out a safe isolation procedure in a competant manner...

and as far as my post at #7 is concerned....why do you think that the only reason to invest in lock off devices is to impress some assessor someware?

cheer simons and sparkdog I think I will go wit the kewtch may be it will be going on a wylex consumer unit. from my conversation with Elecsa. One I have done my installation the assessor comes out to inspect an ask me to test it.

and i bet you it will be a Ze....

so again....why would you need a lock out device if doing a Ze?

as far as dead testing is concerned then you may be asked to get an r1 r2 rn...so check out post #8

And is locking off not part of safe Isolation, I At the moment do not posses one I.E why posted to ask ppl thoughts on types and cost. Not sure what your problem is with my post. It would be foolish to not lock off as I have done many times in previous jobs using what my company provided. I have not started trade as a sole trader yet so have not bought one. Is that a problem Glen

the point i was trying to make to him earlier....is it shouldn`t just be about for a bloody assessment...

Not sure the point you are actually trying to make here mate?
as Davek says, locking off is a part of the safe isolation procedure. For the sake of a couple of quid for a cheap lock off device that can be fixed in seconds, beats disconnecting a circuit and screwing the CU cover back on only to have to remove it again and reconnect the circuit when done, then putting the CU cover back on again.

lmfa. what planet you on is this not a forum for advice or are you just so wind up merchant that bored.

I think the problem is that the interpretation of your original post is that you only lock off (safely isolate) for your assessment and not routinely as part of you working practise.

you buy lock off devices as part of your daily activities...not to impress Mr. Elecsa...

Not sure that would be quite impressive and not to correct procedure, don't think tape will stop anyone turning power back on. Not going to debate this crap. I want to buy a lock off device so I can use it when ever I need too. Not just for assessment go and take your inspecting and testing exam and stick tape on. I guess you would fail.

glenn, OP has explained that he is just going on his own and has, up till now, used lock-off gear supplied by his employer. now needs to get his own.give him a break, lads.

180 quid I paid for them as well. Only managed to take half of them back cause the lads either lost them, trod on them or chucked them when they noticed how bad they were!!
theres some going round that you kind of have these 2 little pins that are supposed to locate into the little holes on the MCB (where you can pull a locking wire through)...you then pull out this toggle to fix the 2 pins and padlock it...

load of crap...all you do is twist the lock off device and it drops off the breaker...

i bet its the same idea as them things you bought Spinky...

i got a safer way, take busbar out and put it in your pocket then replace cover (wont work on certain boards)

wouldn`t need to lock off the incomer...just prove the secondry side is dead...

dont forget...you are going to be in the vicinity during the removal of the busbar

what if you had a dodgy curry the night before, had to dash to the big, in the meantime the apprentice who you had peed off with eggy farts all morning decided enough was enough and turned the switch on, upon arrival back at the board you do not check the main switch as your mind is on the ring sting and bam! Dead!

prophet of doom. anyway i always wear gloves. don't want to leave fingerprints. that could be used against me in court if i ever said " it wasn't me did that dodgy electrical work".

drop some, leave him to mind the board...then get out of there explaining to him how you thought you`d leave him a bit of company....

how do you all replace a consumer unit without pulling the main fuse or waiting 6 months for the dno to turn up?

To be honest, I've never had to wait more than a couple of weeks. Gives me time to plan work in more easily, as I can't do the CU change by Law until the supplier has installed an isolator. ;)

i found a big yellow 240v do not touch sticker, somewhere in the skip, printed "Electrician at work, do not touch" on a piece of laminated paper, stuck both onto some plywood, hang them on the consumer unit/distribution board/utility room in question when working somewhere away. did the job for elecsa assesment.

Posters and signs are all well and good..but...i saw a bus the other day with "kelloggs" wrote on the side, but it was'nt full of cornflakes...
