Went to a job today to fit new sw spur for cooker hood extract and supply eic cert for the ring I worked on. While I was there a guy was stood in the kitchen marking out the walls for sockets . The lady told me he was a local odd job man who is also tiling the wall . She said our company were to expensive to do the lot so he will do the rest . They only wanted me to do the extract and provide a cert which then allows our Fitters to plug in the appliances.I asked the guy if he had part p and he said he never heard of it. I then told the customer who couldn't care less. While the cowboy was just about to spur off the socket 3 times I told him to leave all the work until I've finished testing. What more can you do ?

let him crack on , he will anyway

its a kitchen its Notifiable then it isnt there an option for you to Notify someone doing work when they shouldnt? specialy as the home owner now has a cert with YOUR Name on it

God Im so glad I work for a company and do commercial n not dealing with people like that Id end up hittin someone

Couldnt you put something in the comments box that the cert is invalaid if installation is tampered with in any way shape or fashion and take photos of work YOU have carried out?

Yeah, you'll have to issue a cert so better do that before he corrupts the work you've done. If you've warned the client then there's not much more you can do and as i= says they'll go ahead and do it anyway.

Depressing isn't it.

Well you want to make sure you cross out every area of the certificate that you haven't written in for a kick off.

I would have told the customer that you are obliged to report any work you know happening that should be notified, and that she is the person who is responsible. No wonder the guy was cheaper than you, he's working without regsitration and I seriously doubt if he has any public liability insurance.

A spur can be done on a minor works as it is not a new circuit, it needs notifying under part p though. Then make sure the householder, the council and everyone else you can know he should not be allowed near copper cables.

Im with mogga, can't be dealing with domestic not only does it mean clouting walls day in day out you have to deasl with awkward people who could do with clouting to !

agree, mminorf works and photograph where he.s marked for sockets show clearly they were not there when you did your bit. also, notify LABC that you suspect unqualified installers will be doing work they are not notifying.

Like the guys have said its a minor notifiable job , as for the cow boys ive had a DIY odd job man ,infact i nicknamed him odd job , he rang me this morning and asked if i could tests some work he'd done , CDU upgrade for an elderly couple , said i couldnt so i gave him the number for the head guy at building control he's a right ***** and odd job will go straight in ask him if he'll test his work , boy is he in for a shock .... ooo im evil

There was a post not so long back where it was alleged a member of napit had lashed a couple of kitchens when working for a major diy chain.

So it just goes to show part p makes no little odds in the scheme of things. So why people are still fixated as to whether or not someone carrying out electrical work in domestic premises is part p registered is still a bit of a mystery.

Authorities ain't interested one bit what goes on, and more than likely sit about laughing at those people it bugs.

100% agree

it makes me laugh that work has to be signed off. Do garages gave to have a Government body check all work etc before the car can be driven ? NO
They set these things up to look good , earn a few quid and laugh.
We need to use the German/french method. Its good for us and the customers

I said it before and say it again, its only those who cough up the £400 + a year (or what ever it is) to register, are the ones who get all up tight with those who won't pay and say "never heard of part p" and then laugh lol

Class nick!

We get annoyed with it because we do pay the 450 per year, and then some joker can come along and do shoddy work and have no worries about recourse because there's no one to tell him off. This is a prevailing issue on this forum lately but what you always seem to conveniently forget is it's the law and the law is the law is the law. And we all know that people 'choose to forget certain laws' and apparently that's alright...... but at the end of the day it's NOT alright and if you get caught breaking the law you will (or should) be punished. That's why it's the 'law', not the 'do this if you can be bothered'.

My main issue is that I can't compete with the cowboys because they don't have the overheads or the costs of finishing a job to a satisfactory level

At the end of the day guys ,we do a proffesional job at a fair price ,and abide by the law ,and sleep easy ,no looking over our shoulders and there will come a day when they will come a cropper !!

Would you laugh, if you see me getting in my 5 year old Berlingo ? You must loaded being able to own a big vehicle like a warrior.
your totally missing the point. You said in certain words that the guy must be laughing at me for having part p and him not . If you can't deal with the replies don't fuel the fire.

You have to admit though pritch that you stoke your own fire. If I remember correctly at the end of last year you came on here and in another thread posted that your on about 60k ( or there abouts ) a year, and that you were only working 10 months a year. Now your telling us all about your warrior, you seem to wear your alleged earning potential and wealth as some kind of badge of honour mate, but then make remarks about completeing EIC paperwork when it is clearly just a MEIWC ................... Perhaps a little humilty may stop people having a dig

Been out of domestic for a while now so I'm a bit rusty in that department. Giving out a eic instead of a minor is not really such a bad mistake. The other thread I replied to was asking about what sparkys earn , I replied what was the truth and now I'm being told for doing so I should expect flak. I've seen forums like this before where the old members dictate in the threads and then shout people down.

Old forum member or new, you have to deal with human nature, personally what you earn and drive is of little relevance to me, I was just trying to give you some advice, I'd hoped you might have taken it in the spirit it was intended, but if you hadn't then it is your decision.

While there are people who are not registered and do shoddy work there are people who are registered and do shoddy work there are also people who do the work to the required standard without registration.

Just because money has changed hands for registration to a scheme provider is no indication of the quality of the work carried out let's face it when the assessment is due they actually check a very minute percentage of the work that has been done in last year

I cannot understand why there is an assumption that the work is going to be shoddy if the person doing the work is not registered with a scheme
