Metal light fittings.

Went to house today. Rewired just 6 months ago. Tt - no rcd, ze 203. Low ceilings wanted metal light fittings added. 8 way consumer unit circuits tripled up in mcb. I said you need to get this sorted first. Contact the installer. Sorry but i'm not fitting the metal light fit tings which even a kid could reach. Real low ceilings cottage. Checked continuity of earth at existing lights was ok. Would you have fitted them?

I would not have fitted them as the house has no provision for ADS on earth faults and so is extremely dangerous.
In the case of a fault to earth every bit of earthed metal would remain live.
Assuming the fittings were class I fittings I certainly would not fit them in those circumstances, but then again I also would not do any electrical work in the house until it was resolved and would issue a danger notice.

Is that code for Plumber? How ANYONE could do a rewire and not include RCD's is beyond me and as for "multiple" circuits in MCB's - thats' not good either.

It's always a qualified spark supposedly. Usually described as "a proper electrician" but the clown didn't know what he was doing, if he ever existed.
I'd be willing to bet there were no certs or notification either.

That's £1200 house rewire for you, using a Mains board that's been in stock for a few years. No test certs no paper work. No cares. Please keep us updated. And no i wouldn't of changed the fittings

Thanks for the replies. The owner has contacted the original installer. Will be interesting what they have to say. Probably end up sorting out for them. We will see. Were not all cowboys in Cornwall lol

If the house/owner is dodgy, our company would use red/blk cable and red tape etc.

Not disagreeing with any of the previous posts here, but, ......There are plenty of metal light fittings around that are manufactured to Class 2 requirements.

If no Rcd was fitted,the chances are the installer was a potcher who knows "a lot about electrics"

Very true, but in a deathtrap like that common sense and risk management says just walk away. I wouldn't have fitted anything there. Problem being, what you do may not have made the situation any worse, but when someone gets electrocuted the name of the last person who worked on it is you so guess who ends up in the dock.

My question would be, is one under a duty of care to notify Building Control about it? If so, moral or statutory duty?

no RCD on a TT is an instant 2....so you wouldn`t be carrying out any work until adequate fault protection was in place...would you.

this could take the form of 100mA s type mainswitch with 30mA RCDs for the finals coupled with decent TT earthing arrangements (deep rod/s) for good, stable values of Ra..

just out of interest what was the Zs on the circuits in question?

As i said not disagreeing with any of the above posters, just making a statement that not all metallic light fittings require an earth connection...

well...nearly as bad as the classic i went to deal with today....pendant hanging over bath....socket outlet next to bath ....no RCD and no crossbonding....no main bonding & no main earthing conductor....wallswitch in bathroom next to bath....various damaged fronts & boxes/enclosures etc...

well, put up an IP44 in the bathroom in place of the pendant....a pullswitch in place of the wallplate and got rid of the double outlet next to the bath by sending it through the other way )into the hallway)...oh, and put some supplementary bonding in that bathroom as well..

dealt with all the damaged fronts & enclosures.

put main earthing and bonding conductors in

gave it the dead tests on a condition report so the guy could get the supply reinstated

oh, and i forgot to mention that all the titywork that i came across in the bathroom was recent stuff...BS7671 hadn`t been anywhere near it...
