Discuss New Ground Source Heat Pump Supply in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi,
We have just purchased a 24Kw ground source heat pump and our existing electric supply to the property is made up of two single phases. One phase used to be used for the heating which consisted of about 12-13 x 3Kw storage heaters and the remaining phase for other items cooking etc., within the property. We installed oil heating about eight years ago and so have not used one of the phases since but the overhead wires are still running to the property. I did try to get a new three phase supply to run a much bigger heat pump but the new supply would then have to be upgraded and a larger transformer put on our neighbours property which they do not want. So we are left with having a smaller heat pump with only this two phase supply available. Our electric supplier have quoted to us the largest supply they can let us have which is to run underground (instead of overhead) and to a new termination point (as the heat pumps are going in a new garage we have built and is to be 20 kVA, hopefully this is for each phase and not in total (I am about to enquire) is 20kVA a normal single phase supply can anyone let me know please? Would 2 x 20kVA be a lower amperage supply than say we had before when we had the storage heaters?

In order to have enough power so as to not upset the neighbouring properties on our supply cables we have been told we shall need to balance the power from these two phases to share the load evenly across the phases to avoid overloading. The heat pump start load is 48 amps does anyone know if this is normal practice?
