had at least 3 decent sized jobs lately where customers I've never previously met haven't asked for a price, they just say get on with it !!
Now I'm not one to take the p*** so I charge them fairly, but still seems a bit odd to me, I would always like to know how much something is gonna cost me before hand.
Anyone else in this boat ?

agree a price...before any work is carried out..
get it on paper as well....this way there is no nonsense when it comes for them to part with cash....your cash....

yeh once had one that said just crack on with it. funny thing was they never intended paying and thats why they were not bothered how much it was.

I have another guy I have done a lot for in the past and he never asks or questions when something needs replacing ect. If it is going to be over an ammount I feel he might be uncomfy with then I will have the conversation before to make sure he is fully happy to carry on.

Have any of them paid you yet?

Garages don't seem to have a problem working on this basis - some of them you ask for a price, then they call you back and say the work's done and you car's ready for you to pick up.

kinda interesting question. were they fairly large jobs outa curiosity? I've had a few customers like that in the past, and never really had an issue with payment. the odd time they will question something on invoice, but once explained, happy to cough up. always like to agree a price where I can though. just makes good sense really. never try to rip anyone off and you can't go far wrong. earn their trust and you have a customer for life.

been paid for 2 of the jobs already and fairly sure all will be ok with 3rd as they are good people. but take your point glennspark, i guess agreeing beforehand and getting it on paper is always the safer option

only sure way of knowing you are going to get your money...

not massive jobs dan as I only work for myself part time but all £500+ , I think my location helps too as I live in a rural welsh town where most people know (or know of) each other people are a bit more trusting i guess when it comes to things like this (although there are still a fair share of crooks here too!!!)

yeah...well i lived in a village on the english/welsh borders called Bishops Castle for a bit...

looked nice enough.....what a set of lieing, cheating, swindling, drunken old tw&ts they were...

As glennspark says, get it written down. You might think they are trusting not knowing you from Adam, but it's a 2 way street, and you have no idea what they are like as payers.

I once got asked to rewire a friends parents house. 3 bed rewire, relocation of CU position, kitchen extension to follow in phase 2, 50m sub feed to garden workshop and fit that out too.
I went round for a look and told them I would get a price to them. "Oh it's all right we know you won't rip us off, here's £400 for materials when do you start ?"
I costed it up anyway and met to give them the written quote for the rewire and estimate for the rest. "Oh we don't need to see that, we trust you, as long as it doesn't cost anything stupid like 5 grand"
"No, but it will be around 3.5 to 4"
"HOW MUCH!!!!!! We best have that deposit back"

Imagine if that had gone ahead .......

shrewsbury is nice enough...we still own property there...

but bishops caste....well what can you say...
its got a `reputation`....thats for sure....
but theres some of the best scenery you will find anyware in the UK around there....

I have a few customers who say just do it. I always give at least a verbal quote as I feel uncomfortable them and me not knowing how much the final invoice will be even if it is a rough figure and update them if things change.

I have done it myself occasionally and once was very unhappy with a final invoice but the guy had done all the work he was charging for, just that both he and I had lost track of the total hours he was putting in over a period of a few months so I happily paid him when I went through the days he had done.
