The only thing I don't understand though, is how the telephone used to work with that coily handset cord.

Most Telephone curly cords reversed the coil half way along, much to peoples annoyance, so the speech that slowed down in the first half suddenly got a new lease of life in the second half.

And unbelievably it worked in both directions.
