Was in a call today in posh old part of Edinburgh. Old semi detached two and 1/2 storey 100 year old house. Lovely building but really unsuitable for solar. Small roof area and three massive chimneys all the way too the ridge....

Lovely retired couple. Gentle folk.

Couple of months back they were cold called by national company who sold them two Hitachi Air Source Heat pumps. One has been installed at ceiling height in the dinning room. The other at ceiling height in the kitchen.

The company made no mention of any RHI, gave no indication of running costs, no training in how the system actually works....just sold, installed and left them to get on with it.

Now this is an old stone building with 50% singlazed original sash windows, high ceilings, large open halls and stairways....and from my limited knowledge not the sort of property that lends itself to an ASHP.

Anyway the company came back last week and tried to sell them a 4kwp pv solar system as it would "cover all the running costs of the air source heat pump" as well as give them some spending money....on a roof that will struggle to get 10 panels and five of them would be behind huge chimneys...

Luckily she went online to get other quotes and me and another small company guy have given them proper advice....

Anyway what I said I'd do is to get some idea of the running costs of these Hitachi pumps as its something I don't know a lot about. This morning when I went there they had the two pumps on plus their existing gas central heating........

Any idea of the daily running cost of one of these pumps....and why did the National Company never mention RHI if only to say it may be something she might get...

Im not too sure of running costs of these ASHP's but as you say it sounds like they have been stitched up. They wouldn't get RHI as they are connected to the gas grid anyway. Tales like this really depress me. The Double Glazing type sales folk are having a field day and no-one is doing anything about it. Personally I would prevent anyone who isn't qualified in a technology selling it and make the company directors personally liable for mis-selling.

my 9kw panasonic TCAP runs around 2.5kw on existing rads. Ideally they need to be changed to low temp rads and a buffer tank installed
Size should be around 20litres per kw for buffer tank.
ASHP not suitable for old buildings

insulation insulation insulation

By the way, my pump not turned off for 24hrs

sounds like the green deal would be better for them , the should get eco funding as well if the claim pentions !

Was the ASHP an air to air or air to water - if air to air, IIRC they'll never be eligible for RHI anyway.

Im sure i read that if ASHP replaces mains gas boiler, will be valid for RHI but not full payment.
Anyone know ??
