Testing/signing off commercial and industrial work

Hi all looking for some guidance or info if anyone can help. My situation is that i have recently come out of employment with a company that i served the best part of 15 years with, to set up on my own. Ive registered with HMRC as a sole trader and aswell as finding my own work am looking to go sub-contracting for some local firms.

My issue is when it comes to my own work and specifically testing and notifying it. I have contacted my LABC and sent copies of my 17th edition & 2391 certificates, and am now registered with them as a competant person and so as i understand it can undertake any work in a domestic premise. I intend to register with a scheme at some point but this may be months down the line yet.

I was just wondering how i would go about notifying any work in commercial or industrial environments, as i have already had requests for me to do work in both. Am i wrong to think that being registered with my LABC as a competant person limits me to domestic work? Do i ideally need to become an approved contractor with a scheme provider? Any advice is much welcomed

you don't notify commercial and industrial work to LABC. notifiable works are confined to domestics. you may find that some companies stipulate niceic or another scam, but that's just up to them.

If you have the quals and competency to test then thats all you need,you don't need to be part of a scheme for comm/ ind.
Just test your work and provide certs to customer.

Thanks, i did ask in both cases whether it was being stipulated that a contractor registered within a scheme needed to be used but they couldnt give me a definitive answer. I said i would do some looking into at as to whether i am ok to take on the work with my current set up.

You will find it is down to the individual customer and their insurers some of mine insist on Niceic Ac which I am anyway but some don't care.

Make sure your insurance covers industrial work.

Some companies will stipulate having a larger amount of cover than a domestic electrician would have.

Alsa, a lot of policies don't cover 3 phase. youhave to stipulate it.
