Quick question. I was adding a 2 way switch to a lighting circuit and discovered a T&E where only one wire was used. he second had just been cut off and not used. I always connect unused cores to the CPC and sleeve green/yellow. Is this common practice or just me?

it is considered good practice to do that. not all of us do, though.

I don't know if it's common practice or not, but I was taught to do the same, it was to stop induced voltage pickup, I was told, but seen as you are supposed to Isolate before opening enclosures first, I cannot say if it would make much difference ?

I still do it now if the occasion arises, more out of habit than anything else.

I usually just put any unused cores into connector block for future use if need be?
Bit of both for me. If there's access to both ends then it goes onto the CPC but if not then it is just terminated into an isolator, depends on the installation and if I've installed the whole lot.

i tape them to the sheath

I have sometimes done this too, depending if there is enough room to terminate at the earth terminal or not.

Thanks guys. I know it's not a regs issue as such, just wanted to see what other folks do!

I think there is a reg which suggests you should connect unused cores to cpc, and apparently NICEIC say in no uncertain terms that you should.
Same reasons as mentioned - connect them using connector block and you can bring them into use at a later date, reduce the effects of induced voltages, they'll serve as a cpc in the event of a nail strike etc.

Adam, that's exactly what I was thinking. By connecting to cpc they are no less available for future use than if they were in a connector block.
