I do not wish to become an electrician!!! Nor do i want to be an apprentice. I'm a plumber and happy with that!!!

I've had a trawl through some threads and looked on a few training websites but can't really find what I'm looking for. I'd be grateful for some ideas please!

My wife and I are thinking of buying a small house to renovate. Between us we can do plumbing, flooring, dry lining, plastering, carpentry, tiling, decorating, curtain making, etc, etc. (We can't/won't do building work on the structure or drains and stuff like that - just internal work.)

I passed the Part P Defined Scope about three years ago but have forgotten most of it as I've used my electrician when required during my plumbing jobs (anything to do with the consumer unit or installing new cables, switches, etc.) (I can wire and diagnose/fix faults on S-Plan and Y-Plan systems.)

However, despite the above I'm looking for a short electrician's course to learn and re-learn about wiring, first fix, replacing the consumer unit, the boring earth bonding stuff (I have a mega meter but forgotten how to use it) and so on. I believe that the LABC can test and sign off work or if not I think my electrician will probably be happy to test and do this for me.

Which course would you recommend? Any answers gratefully received!

well either your the same as the people who were unhelpful to you and now you can see there point
but i have not said anything against you and the question i asked for the reasons i asked are as genuine as yours was to this forum so please do not tar me with the same brush as others
but if you dont want to help what can i do

Can't help.

Perhaps that's won't.
i will help. having travelled round the folly of electrical education for the last 4 years i feel qualified to say this but the course u are looking for simply does not exist. a course for domestic wiring and changing fuse boards and the like it just does not exist because this is what most apprentices and mate should be doing day in and day out at most you would perhaps learn abit about 2 way switching but for the most part i learned about 3 phase stuff, power generation, single and 3 phase motors, earthing arrangements. i hope this saves u some time sifting through the dribble that is further education. you might find the reason for the some what rash response is the quick courses we as sparks find are an insult to the trade we practice and take pride in. :-)

So if electrical apprentices aren't allowed to change these items how do they learn and qualify?
i will tell u how i learned i did them myself as a mate. started on my own and a few family members and learned from there. and if sparkys say thats not right well tough cos thats how i learn by doing and asking questions. dont blame me blame some clampit for doing away with proper apprenticships and ruining my changes of a quality start

My apologies, Dingledong.

With some of the incoming I've had earlier in the thread I hope you can understand my response. No excuse for it.

It frustrates me how people treat some trades all the same, like plumbing and electrics, plastering and electrics, painting and decorating and electrics, none of these other things have any of the risks as electrics do, its a skilled trade that takes years of practice, as said previously there's is no short course available to show you how to change fuse boards, you know,Just the basic stuff. lol. The fact that they have put a hold on the requirement to have NVQ3 before you get registered is a joke, another step backwards.

The firm I used to work for didn't allow anyone to touch a fuse board unless they had 3 years experience in the trade. So I had a long wait
