Just a thought. As a fully qualified spark, how do you feel about the DI ? I like everyone to make a living and all, but hell! I just ain't got no love for em.

Hi

not necessarily.

I know of a few time served "old boys" that have been doing it longer than I have been alive, served appreticeships and simply want to do a few domestics jobs in later years. They are "DI's" but not 5 week wonders.

There’s no need to love or hate the five week wonders. It's completely self policing. If their method of training is so much more superior than ours, then evolution will see to it that they succeed and if not it will all go horribly wrong for them.

@ spart , theyre trained and conversed. DI may be their registration. But those on aforementioned 5 week courses then becoming DI registered.

not necessarilarly. some guys just have it in them to do a good job and have done the short course just to get the qualifications. for me, if a guy does a good job, i don't care if he's got 2330, 2382, a degree, or just a grade c o level.

On top of this, the consumer doesn't really understand part p and full scope, and will hire any of the two do to full scope work. Of course the 5 week man will take the work on. Not to say he'll bodge it in every instant, but would you promote that kind of approach ?

No, its a bad tack, for sure, but as Tel says there are exceptions to every rule.

EDIT - just thought, exception to every rule except where ----------- & incest are involved. a sweeping statement, sorry. I may think of others.

Part p is not a bad thing. But to able to train on a course for several weeks, and then be able to get registered to sign off work. Of course people are going to take the ****. They'll sign off all sorts. Furthermore I think it's a major reason why the trade/industry has begun to nose dive. It sends out a message that Any old skivvi can do the job.

Dimestic installer= plastic electrician
There's no point getting on your high horse thinking time served sparks deserve all the work. Domestic installers and short sparky courses are here to stay for now so, best advice is to shut and put up.

i wonder how the medical profession would react to surgeons carrying out operations after a 5 week course, or the legal profession react to Electrical Trainee barristers.

Wouldn't last 5 minutes but not really a good comparison

why not? both professions as well as ours are responsible for peoples' lives.

What sort of "full scope" work do you think a consumer will be hiring a part p registered person to do, that will be beyond their capabilities?

fault finding.

where does loop3 want to go with this topic ? who knows.
anyways , i couldnt give a fig about domestic work , its dull , tedious and the Electrical Trainee / DI is welcome to it.
as to my opinions on their role within the industry , well i need someone to rip into on the forum being the cruel troll that i am.

maybe we can blame the likes of the old eectricians who got a book on the shelves like alan lynch,

his books say electrical work isnt hard, testing isint hard , fault finding isnt hard all logical after you read the book..

get your customers for now, do a good job and youl always be back..

Eh?....so does that mean were all supposed to `put up n shut up` with them just floating in after a few weeks `intensive training`?...lol...

Can someone give me a definition of a domestic installer.
A Domestic Installer is someone who knows how to install, test and maintain a pre-designed range of circuits appropriate to a domestic property.

An Electrician is someone who understands how to design, install, test and maintain an electrical installation.

Actually, I don't.

Aaahh right. So he doesn't have to know how and why it works then?

Correct. Electrics by numbers. "Brown wire goes here, blue wire goes here. Why? Don't worry about why."

Why the hell should the time served QUALIFIED electrician ''Shut-up and Put-up??
He has every right to make his feelings known, when he see's a Tesco shelve filler, taking his professional work from him, after completing a 17 day course!!!

If anything it should be you, to shut and put up, when the real world truth of the matter is being aired!!!

What is the point of this post other than to insult fellow electricians?

Im DI but didnt do a 17 day course I did a 3 year one, why is there a complete lack of respect with a time served DI here?
