Evening, im a practising electrician and have been for 15 years.

I have started at a new company this week and after doing some research on line the company does not appear on any electrical competent persons scheme, the company is primarily a heating and plumbing company with gas safe and MCS accreditation. My question is that where do I stand? as according to the NIC who they hold MCS with, they are NOT registered domestic installers or approved contractors!!! so im guessing that im working illegally?? I only started on Monday. I rang the boss today who was very confused as he just assumed you take on a qualified man, give him a van and away you go. I have always worked for an NIC approved contractor so I have never got involved with the various competent person schemes.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to talk to your boss and explain the business registration is down to him......

What are your qualifications?

I do not know, how he signing it off but I even done a search on he NIC website and my old firm comes up with domestic installer, approved contractor, PAT testing but not MCS but my new company just has MCS on it.

My qualifications are the usual full aprenticeship route with NVQ level 3, 17th ed and my 2391.

I was working for a small firm doing domestic and commercial works the new company are mainly doing boiler installs and replacement.

To be honest it isn't your worry. Just fill in your EIC's and Minor works as appropriate. It is your boss's problem if he is not registered with a CPS scheme.

Are you even carrying out notifiable works then?

I am now as im wiring and connecting new heating systems.

Part P has been diluted a bit from when it started. Kitchens no longer under Part P. Main notifiable works are 1. Consumer units new / replacments, 2. New Circuits, 3. Work in bathrooms.

So aslong as im not putting in a complete new circuit im going to be ok? what about insurance?

I'd expect your insurance is all up together for the MCS. You should register with CPS anyway though so you are not restricted on works.
