New member question on testing and also on how to gain access to ' Trainee Area'

Good evening all,

was told that the trainee area would be a good area for me to go in and I've messaged Admin a couple of days back but haven't heard anything back yet.

Just wondered if anyone else would be able to help on this

And also If I could post a little bit I got stuck on in my work (again) lol :

Identify the tests that would be carried out to locate each of the following faults, as reported by the client.

a) A circuit breaker keeps tripping, as soon as it is reset, which is protecting a socket-outlet circuit.



b) RCD on the outside lighting circuit trips frequently, even though the outside lights are not in operation.


c) Main protective bonding conductor is damaged near to the ’Stopcock’. The conductor is partly concealed in the fabric of the building.

For a) Got a bit stuck on- you can't do RCD test on a) can you as is not RCD ... (apologies if this is a stupid question) would I need to do any test from the socket oulet?

for b) am I right in thinking An RCD test could be performed to test if the RCD is too sensitive?

and c) would be continuity of main protective bonding test wouldn't it ..

Any help would be appreciated , sorry for the long post guys.

you got c) right.

a). short circuit on fixed wiring or a short circuit appliance if plugged in.

b) as the lights are not switched on, (L supply off), there must be a N-E fault. probably wet in a fitting or JB.

a would require a low ohms continuity test between live conductors at various points on the circuit breaking it down as required to narrow down the location of the fault which would be a fault of negligible impedance between line and neutral (or possibly line and earth but as it is a socket circuit it is likely to have 30mA RCD protection in which case the RCD would have gone first)
b would require insulation resistance tests between neutral and earth with the conductors disconnected from the board breaking down the circuit again to identify where the neutral earth fault is located.
c would be a low ohms continuity test using the wander lead method R2 to assess whether the bonding conductor had been damaged sufficiently to increase the resistance of the conductor and so require repair.

Yes mate Know, but I meant from the OP's perspective as a Trainee. Have to be fair, they're not the ones that usually ask the dumbest questions
