SDS drill being used instead of core drill?

I realise this has been asked before, but I find the search bar really poor on the site since the big change and it doesn't come up with anything useful.

I am getting more extractor fan installs that require wall mounted fans. Instead of hiring a core drill once a year I wondered if anyone uses their corded SDS drill?

I used a friends 4kg SDS and it seemed fine. My SDS is a Bosch GBH 2.7kg and I wondered if this was sufficient for perhaps 4 or 5 x 100mm holes p/year?

Just buy a proper core drill

Its not just the cost of the hiring, its also the time wasted to go and get it and then again to take it back.

I use my SDS for maybe 3 or 4 holes a year maximum. Yes, not ideal but it does the job. My take on it is, if it kills the drill its only £100 for a new one. The cost of a decent core drill is much more. My current SDS is around 5 years old so isn't doing bad considering it takes a bit of a beating at times.

I used to stitch drill it out then on to the good old hammer and chisel.

i use the dewalt d21570 core drill, screw fix sell them for around £200

I've just looked back through my records and I bought my core drill 6 years ago ......... prior to buying one the cost to hire was £30

I've used mine about 8 times this year alone so its paid for itself many times over ............ plus its in the garage when I need it

HHD this is the one I bought around 4 years ago, I've used it about 25 times and it works really well - maybe less costly than you'd think ?
You can also get a more powerful 1700w version but I don't think that's necessary for 4"/110mm holes and they're over £600 !

What is the actual difference between a core drill and a SDS with a clutch?

Other than price.

I just use a mains SDS and have had no issues.

The difference is the power to cope with the torque needed.

We had Milwaukee core drills on the firm i did my apprentice with, on the occasion it would play up(user abuse) which meant a trip to the van for a Bosch sds (4kg) jobby. I can honestly say its a real pain to use for core drills as the clutch kicks in constantly and it weights a bloody tonne. It takes about 25-40 mins faffing about with it compared to 5-10 mins with a dedicated core drill.

I wouldn't be using a battery SDS to core holes for fans! Surely no one would. Would they?!

My 240 dewalt sds has cut loads of core holes 32mm to 125mm and I use it for chasing out,still going after 3 years......beat to death but still going best £100 odd quid ever spent!
Best bet is to invest in decent core cutters

ummmmmm....sorry happy hippy buried in my van and I’m buried in the sofa! It is basically their cheap range sds that I bought when first starting out, I do lots of bathrooms and kitchens and partial/full rewires on occasion so it’s had a lot of use! been waiting for it to die for ages so I can justify a new one!
