First MFT advise please

Evening all... Looking for some advice buying my first MFT - got my inspect amd test after Xmas.

Looking at the usual 2nd hand auction sites (cant afford new) and looking at under 300.

Think i have narrowed it down to-

Kewtech KT64.
Fluke 1653
Metrel MI3000.
Not really looked at megger.

Any opinions - guidance/suggestions? Thanks

I got both my kewtech KT64 &KT65 from eBay. The KT65 was from testermans-uk on eBay, they sell refurbished & calibrated used MFT’s.

I like the Metrel MI3000.
Comes with rechargeable battery and is very easy to use.
Only drawback, is it does not test type B RCDs.

The cost of a new one, is less than a 2nd hand Megger.

I've been using a MI3000 for 6 years now. Got it as a cheap MFT with a view to upgrading to a better one eventually. Not yet seen a need to. It had a set of new rechargeables last year and that's about it. Passes every calibration with no adjustments needed.

+1 for Metrel mi3000, evertime I get it calibrated the guy is very impressed how accurate it is.
Downside - it work as 3 wire for loop tests on Z(rcd)
If you looking for second hand one look for blue with black or grey frame, yellow ones were the oldest models.

I like fluke for the test button on the lead

Martindale ET4000 I find it really good. 3 wire loop& rcd test but got used to it.

If you buy a second hand MFT from an auction site, ensure it has a recent calibration certificate and a legible serial number (ask for a photo to verify). If a private seller, look at their sales history and that it stacks up with their reason for sale. In other words, do everything you can to ensure you're not buying something hot. Better still if you can buy a second hand unit from a forum member.

I bought my KT63 for like £360 brand new, ive compared it to a mates kt64... Only thing i can see it doesnt do is phase rotation...

Have to admit i quite like the kt63. Its a quick and reliable tester. I have the kt64dl myself.
When i took it into be calbrated i borrowed a Dilog MFT and was actually quite impressed with how good it was.
I think we fall into a trap too easily of going for megget, kewtech, fluke etc..
The martindale and robbin ones are quite good too.

I like the meggers I’ve always had a megger and they’ve never let me down currently got a 1720, a 1730 and another-1741 I think? did have an old 1553 still kicking about but sold it locally a few months back. I have tried other brands but to me meggers are pretty much the best.

I've got a KT 64 7 years old updated it to the kt65 this year.

It's out of calibration, a bit worn but in working order if interested make me an offer.

I personally love the Kewteck. Really simple to work.
I've got a spare set of Kewteck light fitting tester attachments with one missing I would throw in too.

I would be happy to send to you once a reasonable offer is made and if your happy it works then send cheque or bacs. If not sent machine back, you pay postage my way, I pay postage yours.

I can't say fairer than that.

bought my 1553 megger off MDJ 2nd hand with 12 month calibration, 5 years ago. has passed calibration each year since and has not missed a beat.

I used my Mi3000 for years and was pleased with it. I have now got a megger, I feel more confident in the results it gives me as sometimes the MI3000 gave inconsistent readings even though it was calibrated. However, I think it is a good choice to start out with. It is easy to use and affordable.

If you mean the kt64 it does do ramp test, if you mean the kt63 not sure.
