Discuss cable clips into brick/concrete etc! in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Since we have determined that the cable is clipped direct outside and HHD has repeatedly in other threads identified the cables he would use outside as "outside and 99% of the time I use black rubber flex (in particular H05RN)" and since this is from the nature of the jobs done a domestic installation and HO5RN is suitable for medium severity impact as it is a heavy duty cable then one can be fairly sure that this installation is fine as described and does not need RCD protection, mechanical protection (which can be of various sorts. including capping, depending on the requirements for that protection) or anything else.

Well said Richard!

You are correct... almost :smiley2: It's actually H07RN (I bought a big role from The electric cable co and wish I hadn't as the insulation is so thick!).

I'm a bit unsure how you came to the fact it was T&E PVC Tazz? An explanation would be good, especially as you mentioned 'people who post up quickly without thinking?'

Hmm, you posted H05RN in another thread which is what I quoted:angel_smile:, but I did think you had said H07 earlier; anyway what is 150v /200V between cables, doesn't affect the materials (just the thickness!)

You are quite right Richard :smiley2:

However when I had used up the 0.75mm H05RN (readily available) I looked and looked and looked for 1mm H05RN but couldn't find any (have since found a site!) but I did find 1mm H07RN from a site recommended by Murdoch (thanks again Murdoch - great site) so I bought 100M!! I realise many people are happy using black H05RR (which would be fine!) or even black H05VV but until I have spent a few more years in the trade and can form a proper opinion for myself I'm going to carry on with Rubber/Neoprene (ocassionally using rubber/rubber when I feel bold enough) which I know is suitable for outdoor environments.

How this thread got on to type of cable though I dont know! :smiley2:

Glad that's cleared up then!

Now how about the suggestion of using P clips? If you're drilling a hole for a pin plug you might as well put a rawl plug in and screw a p clip in, and they don't go brittle and snap like plastic clips.

I hadn't heard of them before Dave, thanks.

I think I'll do what I usually do, buy some of both of them (pin plug and P clips) and decide which I like using the best.

Dave this is obvious pvc cable clipping on exterior wall......do think this is correct, or would you protect it...???

Hello Tazz,

I was hoping you would answer my question to you in post 52?

I am unsure how you came to the fact that it was PVC cable that I used, perhaps you could let me know?

As you can see Richard Burns found it fairly simple to check through one or two of my posts and could see the type of cable I use outside.

You also mentioned about people posting up quickly and just writing the first thing that comes into their head, do you feel that perhaps you have done this?

Regards,

HHD.

To be honest, Pvc is what I expected it to be.....In my opinion any cables clip to a wall is just, bad practice, but this is the difference between house bashing, and commercial.

How are you going to attach them to the wall if not with clips?
Or did you specifically mean nail in clips?
There's nothing wrong with P clips, and with the right cable a good electrician can make it look beautiful

How about some nice containment, like tubing solvent sealed, making a nice professional job

Well your on about clipping a cable on the outside, so the type of cable is relevant, You do tend to get the unskilled / badly trained, clipping T&E onto the outside of house's, Which is crap as it deteriorates in the sun.

Also.. don't go near swans as they can break your arm! :smiley2:

Thanks for responding Tazz, still unsure why you would have thought it was PVC, but it doesn't really matter.

I shall give both the pin plugs and P-clips a fair trial!

It's a matter of opinion I guess, I personally would rather see an unobtrusive black cable neatly clipped than plastic conduit. But i'm not a fan of plastic conduit full-stop, it has its uses but i'd sooner install steel.

If it was my house then it would be MICC if it had to be clipped round the outside, far less obtrusive than any other option if you do it right.

threads like this one are the reason myself and many others barely come on here any more, a person asks a question then you all bicker and throw the little knowledge you know out there on a random tangent to prove that you know a reg it's pathetic, well done you know a reg ooh 50mm deep ooh mechanical protection, oh that's the extent of your knowledge? well done you...

It can get frustrating Peter but amongst the many 'random tangent' bits you generally get some useful information from some helpful members. The trick is to ignore the other bits (which I didn't do too sucessfully here :smiley2:) and try and remain polite.

Amongst all the other bits, I have learnt about pin plugs and P clips, so I have got some useful solutions to try out so am happy!

Looks like peters sheep may have ran away from home
