just a quick one lads was changing a few lights for a friend when i isolated lighting circut the alarm went off obviously on same circut but this shouldnt happen isnt the battery ment to back it up had a look for battery none in hand set on wall i presume that its the one in the bell box thats gone i had no ladders to get up there would you say im right thoughts please

Hi there,
Yes you are correct the older alarms do this, the modern ones dont, you need to change
the alarm battery inside the alarm control box for it to work correctly.
Watch out for the boxes with keypads on as they have slim batterys.

sounds like you were looking in the keypad. the panel will be hidden away in a cupboard or even the attic. when you find it, measure the volts on the battery, with and without mains power. it could be an internal fuse in the panel.

Hold on new alarm or old alarm it makes no odds there are 2 rechareable batteries one in the panel and one in the outside sounder As for the panel battery this has a lifespan of 5 years (its always had a this even 30 years ago) after this period it will have a shorter lifespan so say it been in for 7 years then it may have 40 minutes of life in it instead of the standard 8 hours so a small power cut or dip and you dont see anything but after 40 minutes that or the battery no longer holds a charge then when the power is off the box outside activates independantly until this runs down .
How to fix it open the panel you will get a tamper fault remove battery and test the voltage on the leads so if you are getting say 13.5 vdc then fine get a new battery if not the panel may be damaged as it doubles up as a battery charger as well

its amazing how many people dont change batteries on intruder or fire alarms then expect them to work

generally, the battery life will be longer with the more expensive panels. some of the cheap mass market panels have charging circuits as rough as a bear's arse, and will reduce battery life.

Mogga its even more amazing that in the past the guys in the industry did not know either I said 30 years ago because thats when I got into alarms ie to give me an extra string to my bow due to Thatcher So rule No1 one is when fitting the battery write the date on the side and if you change it then do it every 5 years I have a 25 year old Optima 2+ panel in my house
