I got accepted today to James Watt College to Study an HNC in electrical and was told that because so the are a lot of crossover units between the Electrical and Electronics HNCs that its possible to do both in 1 year if i pay for the exam at the end of year i was looking for someone to tell what involved in each unit and how much physics is involved all the way through I do have an B pass on Higher Maths but i didnt even do Standard grade physics i am doing this full time as cant get a full time job and all the bouncing round jobs with agency money is getting worse and all this talk about deskilling the industry with Sparkys mates so my hopes are to do an hnc and get maintenance in factory etc nice secure job can see me talking it to the next level though

the common units between both are

Single Phase AC(principles)
Maths for engineering 1 & 2 (was told 2 was if you where going on to do a degree)
Communication
Electrical Networks and Resonance

Electrical

Three phase systems
Electrical Machines
Power Systems

Electronics

Combinational Logic
Sequential Logic
High Level Engineering Software
Analogue Electronics

It'll probably be like the course I am on at the moment, HNC Electrical Tech.

There will be a lot more maths than what an electrician would do, for example calculus, matrices, complex numbers, thevenin/norton circuits.

In electronics you'll be studying digital electronics and analogue electronics, binary, low level programming (ASM/C++), also circuit design, amplifiers, attenuators, filters.

Electrical machines - Generators and Motors, servo motors and stepper motors, motor control, AC motors and DC motors.

Maybe programmable logic controllers and microcontrollers.

It's moving a little bit away from electrical and more to electronics, about %50, %50. I find it more interesting and challenging than what I learnt last year on the C&G2330, also the people on my course this year are a lot younger and reserved, but it doesn't bother me at least they're not a bunch of ugly moaners that slate others when their back is turned. I'd say stick to progressing through education, maybe get a degree if their isn't a high price on the courses because it will pay off in the long run, especially if you can get out of the UK.

I think they differ in the amount of years to complete, my course is 2 years part time but we have to do a lot of assignments and coursework outside of college. I've never seen a HNC that was offered in a year, it is a course that works alongside a work placement.

Just get something that'll allow you to get out this country, you can't earn anything that decent in this country because you'll just get it taken from you through tax. BankSters and governments screw everything up.

I did my HNC part time over two years (day release at work)

HNC can be completed in one year full time. Plenty of A level standard maths. 10 modules in total. %50-70 coursework/assignments. You also get to wear the cap and gown at the end if your pass. If your doing this at MMU university then good luck!

Best to get HNC/HND done in a college than a university. Uni treats you like a number where college treats you like a human being.

I'm doing the hnc electrical engineering at ayr with pretty much the same units as that but to do it in one year you would need to be doing it full time as its quite a work load doing it at night school
