Hi all. We have a stairway to our basement that obviously lines up with the stairway to the second story. The basement stairway is drywall under the upper stairs - drywall ceiling. It's very dark and not very attractive. I've kicked around lots of ideas: sconces, lamps, rope lighting, step lighting - and I don't like any of them. Step lighting leaves the rest of the stairwell dark. Sconce would be one side only and illuminates oddly. Anyway, I'm wondering if there is any reason that I couldn't put a recessed can in the ceiling midpoint.

Couple of points:

Circuit is dedicated lighting and has "room" to add another light (only 4 other fixtures at the moment.
I can access the ceiling area between the stringers from the basement by drilling up and at an angle.
I have 99.99% confidence that I'll be able to fish from the basement to the ceiling hole with no obstructions.

Assuming that I am able to add the fixture and can physically pull off the installation, are there any reasons that the light can't be installed in that space? I don't see any obvious examples of where it's been done before. Any advice would be appreciated.

can't see any problems, but check the clearance above the ceiling. this may limit you i choice of fittings if the space is tight. some can lights only need 2".

By all means it is legal to install a can light anywhere you want. Quit worrying and install you a light or two. Good luck my friend

Thanks to you both. When I can't find readily available pictures online, I start to think that no one is doing it. Then I think, why is no one doing it?

If I can get it done this week, I'll post pictures and help out the next guy. Appreciate your quick responses!!!
