The sparky I am working with always mounts consumer units on a fire retardant board. I am in two minds as to whether this is necessary.

Regulation 421.1.201 states that the enclosure must be manufactured from non-combustible material but doesn't mention what it should be mounted on.

Can anyone clarify as to whether a metal consumer unit needs to be mounted on a fire retardant board? If so, where is the regulation? Thanks

The idea for the metal consumers is fitted is to retain in side, not the other way round, so if the building catches fire does it mean the board and the cu won't.

I dont do much domestic work but I have seen many new builds where they are mounted on wood and I'm not aware of any regulation that says it can't be done

The board it is mounted on is far less likely to catch fire than the furniture polish and fly spray sitting on top or the coats hanging off the corner.
