Current electrical regulations help please.

Looking for advice.

Can you advise the current situation with having minor work carried out., as to regard of certification.,

1. Installation of new shaver point in bathroom. no previous point in bathroom.
2. installation of spot lights in bathroom ceiling to replace pull cord. ( switch on outside bedroom door.)
3. Reposition of shaver point from one wall to another. different bathroom.
4. New electrical shower pump installed.


looking up on line and its very confusing !

Minor works for each altered circuit

The work sounds like it could be covered by BS7671 Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate(s) but that doesn’t affect a possible requirement to notify Council of the work under Part P in England and Wales.

The bathroom is a Special Location and Part P of the Building Regulations wording is something like “alterations and additions in a Special Location are to be notified”. But there are zones defined so that if your bathroom was open plan (!!!) you wouldn’t need to consider the whole house a Special Location, at least under the wiring rules.

The electrician that carried out the work for you will complete the relevant certs

1. If a new circuit then EIC or if taken from existing circuit then MWC.
2. If an alteration to an existing circuit then MWC.
3. If a new circuit then EIC or if taken from existing circuit then MWC.
4. If a new circuit then EIC or if taken from existing circuit then MWC.

That appears to fit within the scope of electrical works notifiable under Part P.

My certificate software has minor works cert that covers up to 5 alterations so if no new circuits are installed you could use one of them but as others have said it sounds like the work is notifiable

There are two distinct strands: certification and notification.

Part P notification will have to be carried out for any work in zones 1 or 2. That's the only legislated requirement and it's left to your responsibility to ensure it's done. Generally that means the electrician needs to be registered and you should confirm it was done. (It is possible to do it yourself beforehand to the LABC but expensive for small jobs like this).

However, spotlights often end up technically just outside the zones due to their height (above 2.25m), so may not be notifiable.

Regardless of the above, certification should be provided for the work. I'd expect there to be no new circuits for what you've described, so it would likely take the form of one or more Minor Works Certificates. (A new circuit back to the consumer unit would require an Electrical Installation Certificate)

If it's being installed by a bathroom fitter, then do check that there will be some certification forthcoming as they are sometimes poor at doing it, or passing it on to the client where it has been provided by their electrician. (personal experience talking there).

The only one that may not attract certification is the shower pump, if it comes with a plug and there is already a socket in place, though I'd still hope someone would be checking the socket to ensure it's satisfactory before installation.
