Hi,

Scenario:
Electric meter and fuse box (no consumer unit) in Flat 1 basement. We own Flat 2 (on the first floor) and have no access to Flat 1.

Our proposed solution: We would like to install a modern consumer unit off the meter and have that located in the communal area of the flats. Electrical wire from consumer unit straight up the wall and into Flat 2.

Question: What is the maximum permitted distance between meter and consumer unit?
We understand it is up to the local suppliers but this feels unsatisfactory.

I hope you can help.

Helen

Usually 3m or thereabouts. However if a switch fuse is installed in the cable run within 3m of the meter, the CU can be anywhere you like (although there may be constraints regarding the type and installation method of the cable used).

Without having seen the job, I would strongly recommend getting a quote from the electricity supplier for a new cutout and meter located in your flat. They may be able to take the supply from the existing location. If it's a short cable run, it may not be too expensive.

HandySparks,

Thank you that was really helpful.

We are hoping to get some sparkies out this Sunday to quote and do if possible. Know of any decent sparkies in Margate?

Regards,

Helen

He was great, came out to look at the job straight away. Offered sensible advise. Thank you.
